planning to play hockey in Oak Park Saturday morning at 6am. This could make things pretty interesting although at that time there won't be too many other cars on the road.

10 inches of snow last Saturday. Supposed to get another 4-6 with 35 MPH this weekend.

Also heard it's not supposed to be above freezing here for the next 2 weeks.

Calling for 5-9 inches here just over the border in Wisconsin. I live pretty close to the lake so maybe we'll be closer to the high end of that.
My guess is more like 3-6" at the most. Actually looking forward to using the snow blower some and not having to go too many places this
weekend, other than out to dinner tomorrow night.

FRI-SUN, JAN. 18-20TH WINTER STORM UPDATE #5
1/18/2019 0 Comments

(12:15AM - 1/18/19) Thursday night update on the expected winter storm to affect the state this weekend... While this storm is likely and snow is less than 24 hours away for some areas, there is still major disagreement within model guidance regarding snowfall amounts and placement. What this means is that our TAM snowfall forecast at the bottom of this post is based off of current model guidance and observations, but will likely change based on further model guidance and observations, which hopefully will come to more of an agreement by morning. We will have an update during the morning, to hopefully provide a clearer picture regarding the situation.

A this time what is known is a winter storm will affect the state Friday afternoon into Saturday evening, with lake effect snow possible for areas closer to Lake Michigan from Saturday into Sunday. Snow will be likely across most of the state at some point during this period. Snows will likely affect all of Northern and portions of Central Illinois Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, and then portions of Central and Southern Illinois Saturday morning into Saturday evening.

At this time the only thing that model guidance has been consistent in showing and is in some agreement on is a period of frontogenetic driven snow across portions of Northern Illinois from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. However, there is still less than average agreement on the exact location and amounts within this axis. For now we will go with a blend of guidance for location and amounts, with 6-9" expected along and north of I-80. Snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour will be likely at times during this period as well.

Further south, there are two solutions in play for portions of Northern Illinois south of I-80 on into Central Illinois and Southern Illinois. The first solutions is some synoptic snow to push through, allowing for light to moderate snowfall accumulations, higher north and lower south. The second solution would be if the storm system intensifies and becomes better organized as it pushes east-northeast across the Ohio Valley, which would lead to a larger area of snow to develop that would traverse portions of Central and Southern Illinois, leading to moderate to higher end accumulations. For now we will lean towards the first solution, with more lighter to moderate snowfall accumulations expected, higher north and lower south.

In addition to the main storm system, lake enhancement to the snow is likely across portions of Northeast Illinois near Lake Michigan from Friday evening into Saturday morning. This could lead to some enhanced totals for those areas during that time. After the synoptic snow exits the area Saturday morning, pure lake effect snow will be likely from Saturday morning into the middle of the day on Sunday. This will bring the potential for several more inches of snowfall accumulation in Northeast Illinois, for areas near Lake Michigan. Snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour will be likely at times. For areas near Lake Michigan, snowfall totals may reach upwards of 12-15" due to a combination of synoptic snow and lake effect snow.

Below is our current TAM snowfall forecast. As the disclaimer said at the beginning of the post, this is based on current model guidance and observations, and that model agreement in poor at this time. Another update will be provided in the morning, hopefully one that will portray a clearer picture regarding this storm.

From Bob Gardiner at Lake County Stormwater Management Commission:

Overall, not a lot has changed from previous forecasts other than bumping up our snowfall amount a bit and we might see snow starting to fall earlier. The National Weather Service has our area under a Winter Storm Warning from 3pm today through noon Saturday for 5” to 9” of snow plus blowing and drifting. Don’t be too surprised if you see the warning extended Saturday night.
First, where is the center of the storm now? It just came over the Rockies and is in the plains heading this way. I put a little red dot over the center of circulation. The red is warmer air while the blue is colder. We will probably start seeing snow start falling by mid to late afternoon today. In the chart below right, the brown line (3%, 14%, etc) is the probability of precipitation. You can see that the probability really starts to increase after about 1:00pm today with about a 14% chance at 1pm and a 64% chance at 4pm. The forecast snowfall is the blue bar graph and indicates we could see around 0.9” of snow between noon and 6pm. The current forecast for wind between noon and about 4pm is abut 5mph to 10mph. I’m thinking this may impact our afternoon commute a bit. It’s relatively light snow and light wind but once it's on the road it seems to snarl traffic…even if the roads are salted and plowed! Be that as it may, I’m thinking the drive home might be a bit slower than usual but probably not that bad.

The storm really starts to ramp up after about 6pm tonight. The winds pick up and we are looking at probably 6”+ of snow. The temperatures tonight should remain in the mid-20s giving us a relatively dry, fluffy snow that will blow around a lot and drift, reduce visibility and make the roads slippery. I think driving tonight will be a bad idea. The above snowfall forecast includes some anticipated lake enhancement as the cold air blows over the relatively warm Lake Michigan.

The snow is forecast to lighten up a bit Saturday afternoon, however, there is a pretty good chance (currently 57%) that we will see lake effect snow kick in later Saturday night into Sunday morning. Lake Effect Snow is not in the current snowfall forecast so it would be in addition to the current forecast amounts. In general, the NWS thinks there is a good chance lake effect snow will affect Lake County. They can’t determine exactly where it will show up or how long it will last before it moves on. All that being said, we may see an additional 2”-4” or maybe even 3” to 5” Saturday night into Sunday morning. To give you an idea of where the snow is forecast to fall, below is the areal probability distribution of getting >=4” and >=8” between 1pm Friday and 1pm Sunday (48-hour period)…this is from the Weather Prediction Center and I don’t think it includes the possible lake effect snow either. You can see the bullseye is right over our area.

Lake County Skywarn just posted this:

HAZARDS: LCS Hazard Level 3 from 4 PM Friday until 10 AM Saturday

SHORT TERM: Well, here we go. This will be a typical snow event for the Chicago area. Fortunately, it will occur on the weekend. There could be a few travel issues during tonight's rush hour as the snow should begin late this afternoon. It's also likely, because it's Friday, people will leave work early. Guidance is still right at 6.0" with the 80-40% range at 3.8" to 7.7" leaving us with reasonably good confidence. So 4-8" expected. Snow will continue overnight. Temps will be 24-29 thorough tonight.

LONGER TERM: Snow should be diminishing in the mid morning time frame. Latest data shows peak wind gusts have backed off a bit and are now expected to peak around 30 mph. With snow/water ratios about 12:1, there will be some blowing snow during the day Saturday. Still having a hard time grasping much lake effect. BUFKIT data is still a bit marginal as the lift is a bit above the best snow growth zone and the inversion heights are still under 6.000 feet. However, it would not take much of an increase to get a more robust lake effect going. As with all lake effect situations, exact area of snow is difficult to determine but we can deal with that tomorrow. The Tuesday clipper system has taken a more easterly track so models have backed off on snow amounts. If fact it could even be mixed with rain. Models have also backed off on the Arctic cold and pushed it more east. So we will get a more modified brand. We may escape the below zero mornings.

Today:(B) Snow beginning this afternoon. High 29
Tonight:(B) Snow.with some blowing snow late. Low 24
Saturday:(B) Snow diminishing to snow showers during the late morning. Some blowing snow will continue. High 26.
Saturday Night;(C) Chance of lake effect snow. Low 12
Sunday:(C) Becoming partly cloudy. High 17
Sunday Night:(C) Partly cloudy. Low 6
Monday:(B) Partly cloudy. High 20
Monday Night:(C) Partly cloudy. Low 16
Tuesday:(C) Some snow likely possibly mixed with rain. High 34
Tuesday Night:(C) Chane of light snow. Low 20
Wednesday:(C) Chance of snow flurries. High 24
Wednesday Night:(C) Partly cloudy. Low 13.
Thursday:(C) Partly cloudy. High 24
