If you like Philip Seymour Hoffman, check out Owning Mahowny. Be warned, not a feel-good flick, but excellent nonetheless.

That was good. My favorite Hoffman roles were in "Boogie Nights", "Happiness", "Flawless", and "Almost Famous". He was great as Capote too.

1) 20 bucks - follows the life of a 20 dollar bill
2) Donnie Darko - if for the following scene

He was also good in Love Liza. But considering that is the most depressing film I've ever seen in my life, I don't think I'll watch it again, despite giving it a thumbs up.

American Movie

This is a documentary about a Milwaukee 20 something trying to make his dream movie. This was made semi popular by Brandmeier several years ago. You would swear it is staged but you would be wrong. It is hillarious.

I was thinking about it but I thought everybody knew about that movie by now.

I agree Bulldog. If not for the ending, I might even call it a great movie. I think Spike Lee is good when he concentrates on making movies instead of pushing his viewpoints.

I loved Freeway! Reese Witherspoon was Fantastic. "Well, look who got beat with the ugly stick!"

Before Slingblade, Billy Bob Thorton wrote and starred in a great movie called One False Move. It's about 3 killers on the run, and the small town Arkansas sheriff (Bill Paxton) trying to apprehend them. Thorton is chilling as the ringleader. Definitely worth a look.

One of my absolute favorites that flew under the radar is "eXisTenz". Jude Law in a is it real or is it memorex kinda plot. You MUST see this movie at least once.

GATTACA starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, and Uma Thurman is OUTSTANDING!

It takes place in the not so distant future, where parents can basically select the genetic makeup of their children to create a "perfect" genetic specimen. Ethan Hawke plays a guy who doesn't win the genetic lottery, but defies the odds to gain employment at GATTACA (basically a futuristic NASA that only accepts the genetic elite). The movie sort of strikes a debate of the implications of the human genome project...

Another good flick that isn't especially well known: Lone Star (Chris Cooper leading role)

Pretty much all of John Sayles' movies are under the radar and I've enjoyed the ones I've seen: "Limbo", "Men With Guns", "Lone Star". Skerritt was great in that one.

"Broken Flowers" was good...came out last year. Very small release.

I might have been the first to react on this thread. Saw Green street houligans last night, good stuff, never heard of it until reading this thread

Ah! Thank you! I saw this about 5 years ago on HBO, and I couldn't remember what the damn name of the movie was. Very strange movie; I'd like to see it again, as I think I missed the beginning.

If anyone is interested in seeing Freeway, it's on Showtime for the next couple of weeks along with Showtime On Demand. Made my wife watch it last night even and she didn't hate it which says a lot. She hates every movie.

I just stumbled across this thread and I wanted to put my two cents in to say Twelve Angry Men is probably is one of my favorite movies of the B&W era. I've always been fo the school of thought that you have to have character development in a movie for it to be worthy of being labeled good/great. This movie is the epitomy of that. For the most part the movie takes place in one room. There's no action and/or fireworks. Just down right good dialogue, acting, and simple, but effective cinematography. This is one of my all-time favorites.

Totally agree, Ryan. 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird (with Gregory Peck), and It's a Wonderful Life are my three favorite B&W movies.

Actually, while typing that I realized another under the radar movie that is also in black and white for part of the movie - Pleasantville. Its an especially good movie considering its McCarthyism and its relevance to today's political environment. Definitely a good movie to see anyway.
