Just watched it again.

I remember when I first saw it, I thought the love for it by the masses was wrong. Thought everybody overrated it. Just thought it was OK. But I was wrong. This is a great movie.

Sizemore, Burns, and Damon are super hot. I can't stand Ribisi and goldberg. good movie.

That first 15 minutes or so is rough. The other scene that gets me is when Ribisi tells the story of pretending he was asleep so he didn't have to talk to his mom.

Yeah. That got me too. There are a lot of good moments of the guys talking in this movie. It's a "brotherhood" movie more than a war movie. The war is actually just the back drop. I love it.

The opening scene was like the entire reason for doing the movie.

What do you mean? Actually give people the reality of how it was when they stormed the beach? Cuz they did it with that scene.

Yeah, I don't think there had ever been a battle scene of that scope and that veracity. The rest of the movie is more or less a Spielbergian tribute to WW2 unlikely-band-of-brothers films. Tom Hanks = John Wayne. Still should have won Best Picture, though.

One thing I didn't get. I know it's a movie but it still didn't make sense.

The end of the movie.

They knew the Germans were coming for that bridge. After the big battle, the planes come in. Well, why weren't the hovering around before the guys had to do that battle on the ground? Why didn't they drop bombs on them as they were coming in?

And why did Tom Hanks venture out to get shot? Dumb ass!!!

I still like "When We Were Soldiers" better. :)

And in real life, why did we storm the beach on boats? Shit, why didn't we send in planes to bomb the hell out of the beach? Then send in the soldiers on boats once it was cleared.

I'm no general, but that would have been the better war strategy.

Nah the The Thin Red Line's robbery would've been even more egregious if it got beaten by another war movie.

Read your history. The planes couldn't clear it in the right time frame.

I love the movie. The ending with the old man is powerful.

But, the best part of this movie is that it directly led to Band of Brothers.

The weather in the English channel was notoriously inclement, which handicapped air support to a degree, so the invasion had to wait for an opening and for a full moon to expose what underwater defenses the Germans had at the beaches. Plus, the Germans were entrenched in heavy concrete bunkers on the beaches that were resistant to bombing.

If the allies had shown their hand by bombing the beaches ahead of time, the element of surprise of where they were landing would have been lost. Rommel would have ordered his panzer divisions to those beaches, and we would have gotten slaughtered.

30 minutes of Good Spielberg, 90 minutes of Bad Spielberg, 20 minutes of Good Spielberg, 5 minutes of the most hackneyed garbage ever committed to film.

We did get slaughtered, it was a bloodbath..I think they should have waited a day or 2 for the weather to clear up.

The invasion of Normany and liberation of France is universally considered one of the great military successes in world history. I'd find something else to nitpick than a few landing craft missing their beach by a mile or two and still breaching the German defenses.

The biggest compliment I can give this movie is that after watching it it made me want to learn about WWII. I devoured just about every Stephen Ambrose book as well as many other books and documentaries about WWII as a result of seeing this movie.

We Were Soldiers was indeed another powerful movie (and a true story). Hacksaw Ridge makes the cut too.

Saving Private Ryan is right up there especially the opening scenes on the beach and that ending with the old man. We who have never fought in wars should be so grateful to our military, both past and present, for preserving our rights as Americans.

The beach sequence should be shown to history classes in all high schools.

I remember some showings of it on regular tv were uncut to preserve its scope. also, I'm pretty sure any network or channel that wants to show Schindlers List isn't allowed it edit the content.
