well there are war movies, and then there are military movies. "black hawk down" is a military movie. it doesn't take place during a war in the classic cinema sense.

"full metal jacket" has moments of greatness but it's an extremely uneven film. after already having great vietnam films, it doesn't stack up very well.

It is purposely uneven though. Really the most realistic experience in any of the movies.

I know Thin Red Line is intolerably boring but damn it is pretty good thematically and psychologically

looking for a movie to watch with the kids I stumbled across "The Great Dictator." I was aware of it but had never actually watched it before. So we watched it. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you do!

What Vietnam War movie stands out above Full Metal Jacket? Platoon is a celebration of a Samuel Barber song.

The Man in The Grey Flannel Suit is kind of interesting in that it is a mid-1950s movie showing WW2 vets with PTSD.

Not a perfect film but kind of interesting as a sort-of sterilized, time-capsule look at corporate America and veteran issues in the mid-'50s.

The Best Years of Their Lives is the most famous of that post WWII PTSD genre. It'll be a couple years yet before Jr. and I delve into that subject in detail.

One of the best war movies is a German film, "Downfall", about the last days of Hitler in the bunker.

If people didn't like it, it was because the film portrayed Hitler as human and not necessarily a monster.

I'm always amazed that the Russians took Berlin by themselves.

Great movie, but it didn't explore George completely. Totally ignored his sweet side. Hooah!

I think portraying him as a monster is almost into the Fuhrer cult.

I watched this over the weekend, and have to agree that it is a very good movie. Good recommendation. It got two thumbs up from Dan Fouts too.

Downfall has spawned some of the best parody videos. Here is one example:

I'm a "big tent" guy when it comes to the definition of what is a war movie. So I count Against the Sun as a war movie although it is just 90 minutes of three guys in a raft. Pretty good for what it is. How many movies nowadays are rated PG?

3/4

Discovered a great one for war movie buffs. This is a real psycho drama: ATTACK! starring Jack Palance doing a one handed pushup while dying.

4/4 stars

TCM runs In Harms Way a lot. Long ass Otto Preminger WW2 flick with some risqué for the time dark subject matter ( Rape!!) John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal.

One of my favorite scenes about ex-soldiers occurs in David Lynch's The Straight Story. Two vets talk about friendly fire more than 50 years later. It was pretty powerful.

Straight Story was great.

The Pawnbroker
Deer Hunter

Schindler's List?
Apocalypse Now

Seen a couple war movies lately.

Fury: Bloody, gruesome mess that portrays Americans liberating Europe as war criminals. 0/4

Gallipoli: kind of a bro movie with some homo eroticism thrown in. Mel Gibson and some other dude you never heard from again are sprinters in Australia and somehow decide to join the British war effort in modern day Turkey. Big mistake. pretty good movie though. 3/4.

Fury is a pretty brutal movie. I don't think I would give it 0/4 stars mind you but it was a tough watch. Not because it was done poorly just because it's s but intense. I assume you are referring to the shooting of prisoners and perhaps the apartment scene as the war crimes.

Never managed to dit through Gallipoli. A,wats catch it while I'm about to go do something and don't have time to dedicate 90 minutes or whatever to it. It's on the list, I should check prime to see if it's available. Or Netflix as I finally buckled and tried it. Works okay as long as kids aren't streaming stuff.

shooting POWs and raping and pillaging villages, yes, those are war crimes. did they happen in real life? yes, to some degree, but we don't make blockbuster war movies where the "heros" do that shit.

Gallipoli, the last 30 minutes or so are really good and intense. first 90 mins are pretty slow.

Not saying they weren't war crimes, just making sure I didn't miss something else.

I'll keep that in mind with Gallipoli.
