Button 48 material, I know, but I first saw Patton as a 15 yr old in the theatre it was first publicly screened at on the West Point campus. Got a sales pitch on attending immediately thereafter by a full bird colonel. I'd never been so charged as after that.

Force 10 from Navarone, on the other hand, sucked. Han Solo and the guy from Jaws (not one of the Jewish ones) were in it.

I saw one war movie with Natalie Wood and Christ was she hot.

Tolstoy's book was better than the movie though.

The 2nd half of FMJ was disappointing. Its reputation is based on the basic training scenes and R Lee Ermey in particular.

I thought the 2nd half made it a great war movie. Before then I thought it was a great comedy.

We Were Soldiers Once and Young is a pretty solid read as well.

If you're into that "War-era" anything by Kenneth William Nolan is top notch.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Black Hawk Down. Pretty faithful adaptation of Operation Gothic Serpant IMO. Good ensemble cast. Maybe I'm biased bc I knew Col. Steeles kid in the 82nd. Poor guy got quoted "pretty funny hooah" all the time.

"Troop Beverly Hills" depicted the territorial war between two Girl Scouts troops Maybe not a true war, per se, but a good watch nonetheless. Do the Freddy!

well there are war movies, and then there are military movies. "black hawk down" is a military movie. it doesn't take place during a war in the classic cinema sense.

"full metal jacket" has moments of greatness but it's an extremely uneven film. after already having great vietnam films, it doesn't stack up very well.

The actor or the soldier? I don't ever recall any diddling. Col Steele did get in trouble for unauthorized killings during OIF

the character ewan mcgregor played had to be changed. the actual soldier was charged with sexual assault of his niece, IIRC.

What about films that depict people after the war? I think Kevin Costner made a bad one, and they killed a good book with the shitty In Country.

One of my favorite scenes about ex-soldiers occurs in David Lynch's The Straight Story. Two vets talk about friendly fire more than 50 years later. It was pretty powerful.

i thought both the book and movie of "in country" were good. emily lloyd was fantastic as samantha. i had mentioned "war at home" movies...and i think one of the best is "born on the 4th of july". the second half of "the deer hunter" is pretty much that too.

i think my favorite documentary of the vietnam war is "dear america". has the best soundtrack that was almost completely ripped off by "forrest gump" 7 years later.

nothing on TV last night so I watched 12 O'Clock High. reel good (ha ha). 3.5/4 a movie about PTSD from 1949! not a whole bunch of action though. a study of military leadership.

The Best Years of Our Lives was good.

The Best Years of Our Lives (aka Glory for Me and Home Again) is a 1946 American drama film directed by William Wyler and starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, and Harold Russell. The film is about three United States servicemen readjusting to civilian life after coming home from World War II. Samuel Goldwyn was inspired to produce a film about veterans after reading an August 7, 1944, article in Time about the difficulties experienced by men returning to civilian life. Goldwyn hired former war correspondent MacKinlay Kantor to write a screenplay. His work was first published as a novella, Glory for Me, which Kantor wrote in blank verse.[4][5] Robert Sherwood then adapted the novella as a screenplay.[5]

The Best Years of Our Lives won seven Academy Awards in 1946, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actor (Fredric March), Best Supporting Actor (Harold Russell), Best Film Editing (Daniel Mandell), Best Adapted Screenplay (Robert Sherwood), and Best Original Score (Hugo Friedhofer).[6] In addition to its critical success, the film quickly became a great commercial success upon release. It became the highest-grossing film and most attended film in both the United States and UK since the release of Gone with the Wind, selling approximately 55 million tickets in the United States [7] which equaled a gross of $23,650,000.[8] It remains the sixth most-attended film of all time in the UK, with over 20 million tickets sold.[9] The film had one of the highest viewing figures of all time, with ticket sales exceeding $20.4 million.[10]
