I was going to take my wife but I will wait for your review. If it's one of those musicals where they sing about library books and the weather,then fuck it.

Its really a wonderful film. The numbers are mostly upbeat and enjoyable even if they get a little stale near the end, but that's true of most musicals. Also I'm not a huge fan of Emma Stone or Ryan Goslings voices, but its not terrible and you can get over.

But holy shit does it roar out of the gate like few movies have in recent years, and not just musicals. The writing and the story and the acting and just the fucking moviemaking that went on are all off the charts. It was like the creative energy of a million fucking people all fed into this thing and it shows in the most subtle ways possible. The wardrobes are really brilliant and choreography is fantastic. The long takes are not show offy in a HEY HEY LOOK LOOK LOOONNNGG TAKES IMPRESSIVE HUH? way, but in an immersive way where. When the frame can be uninterrupted as it careens down an offramp in this gargantuan traffic jam number (that opens the movie) its really something. Either the CGI was brilliant or they filmed on location. Speaking of which...

This is why there is still value of filming in Los Angeles despite all the headaches it now induces. Absolute best of the best working on this movie and goddamn does it show.

I like musicals but I don't really like them in movies.

i think i read a review a while back that mentioned the first 10 minutes don't do the whole movie justice, and i can see why they said that. not as jarring as "moulin rouge" (which really crossed into obnoxiousness), but the opening number almost feels out of place with the rest of the film.

until you think about the film as a whole...the ending has a different feel than a normal musical. and that's writer/director damien chazelle's goal: to make a musical but turn it on its head a little bit. chazelle is quickly becoming one of my favorite young filmmakers. his 2014's "whiplash" was easily my favorite film of that year. here, he takes a lot of tropes from classical musicals and does his own thing. he's certainly got a lot of confidence in himself and it shows.

it's really the "city of stars" number that drew me in completely. from there, i was all in. the music is good, it's catchy; the dancing is excellent. the story is strong enough, and the two leads are perfect.

my favorite throwaway character is the writer in the beginning talking about how he wants to write a movie about goldilocks and the three bears and write it from the bears' perspective. chazelle's little digs at the wannabes are nice little touches.

it's a great film experience. it'll do well at the oscars.

It was okay, sort of. The ending was slightly unexpected and sad but you can kind of make up your own real ending. I'm not a Ryan Gostling or Emma Stone fan and she can't dance. It was a romantic musical not on par with other romantic musicals, but I didn't hate. It's a chick flick. I don't think it had much of a plot beyond cliches and the music couldn't carry it.

no one could follow the way i gave half smilies so it simplifies everything. i definitely think it's good, and all musicals are cliche'd in a way. i liked that this ending was a bit different than others.

Maybe that's what I didn't like. If you are a musical you have to go all in or you have to have a solid story line. It didn't do either well. Emma Stone can't dance.

It's a pretty decent movie.
No song is memorable and that is a problem.
There should be a show-stopper or at least a song that haunts your head after the show is over.
Gosling dances surprisingly well but really can't sing.
Stone is very average at both dancing and singing.
There are no musical stars anymore. Hollywood has to force actors and actresses to sing and dance.
The director is in love with the shot where the camera whirls around 360-degrees repetitively.
The overuse gave me a headache.
I give it seven out of ten, basically for effort rather than results.

Another Day of Sun is a very memorable song

I saw it on Saturday and agree with this.

Saw this on Saturday. It was really quite enjoyable, I don't remember the last musical I had even seen. Pretty skeptical going in,
thinking that it wouldn't be as good as all the hype but I was pleasantly surprised. There were even a few tunes I found myself
humming along to this morning still. The use of color and lighting were great and the performances were also very good. They
weren't necessarily very good singers or dancers but serviceable enough. This kind of movie was in my wife's wheelhouse and she
really enjoyed it very much. It was definitely in the top 5 movies I saw from last Oscar season but didn't like it quite as much as
Moonlight.

I also tried to watch this over the weekend, but unlike the beta who posted above me, the wife and I turned it off after an hour cause it was so bad. NO idea what the hype is about. It was like watching paint dry if paint drying also came with a shitty soundtrack.


If you want to see a musical that doesn't suck, watch Moana.
