yes. this is a good way to go given the end of the last book. now they can use clever creative license to introduce the additional main characters in the next one and choose a solid story path to include the best parts. that was always an issue with attempting to adapt these books. so much filler with only limited screen run to do it

This is the smartest possible move the filmmakers could have made for this franchise.

If they do a straight-up retelling of the books and it's not 100% perfect (whatever that means), diehards will hate it and newcomers will hate it due to the ending.

Here's the problem right now. Diehards are going to see it no matter what. I've shown the trailer to multiple people that never read the books and they all say it looks like shit. So if this shitty looking reboot (reimagining, sequel, whatever you want to call it) isn't bringing in new eyeballs, why not just make it closer to the books?

I know I am interested in the film, and I haven't read a single one of the Dark Tower books. The combination of a King story (sort of) along with two of the better actors in Hollywood should help this film make decent $. Then again, if the initial reviews are terrible it could ruin all the plans put forth for extending the series. MANY people are not fans of Sony right now btw.

The trailer looks pretty damn good, mcconaghy and stringer bell are both good actors, it looks like a winner Imo.

Don't underestimate the number of diehards that have been waiting for years for something like this. Which, honestly, is a double-edged sword.

Just picked up The Gunslinger book at the airport last week and cruising right along. So far it is pretty interesting.

I liked the first 4 books.

5 is where it went off the rails.

Four is usually fans pick for their favorite.

My ranking is:
The Wastelands
Wizard and Glass
Drawing of the Three
The Gunslinger
Wolves of the Calla
The Dark Tower
Song of Susannah

That's how I view it as well, though I really enjoy the beginning of Wizard and Glass and the ending of the contest with Blaine.

I need to reread the first 4 books again.

My question:

Why is this movie going to suck despite the fantastic source material?

  They can't get anything right. How are you going to do an origin story based on Wizard and Glass with a 44 year old actor? He was a 15 year old in W&G... these fucking guys.
