Drops today. Watching the intro now and will watch the rest of the first episode later.

Not too shabby so far, but slightly different.

First movie is "Reptilicus". A friend of mine tried to do his own MST about 20 years ago with this movie. Had a script done and everything. Even started working on the silhouette backdrop...

Did Joel or Mike come back or is it a new guy?

No, all new cast. New host is Jonah Ray, playing Jonah Heston.

It's still Crow, Servo, Cambot and Gypsy. Just voiced by different actors (though Cambot has no voice).

Mitchell was the best episode IMO

Even better when I found out Joe Don Baker was furious after watching it.

So "Reptilicus" is a damn fine premiere episode it turns out. they do a musical/rap number that's actually really well done.

i'm looking forward to the rest of the season. great start afterall!

Agreed...it was very good.

Also - Joel had a bit part in it and is also the producer. He got the funds for the reboot through kickstarter.

Hard to write this show without Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy. They're the difference between MST3K and "People Making Fun Of Movies."

I don't dismiss their talents but I laughed throughout the 1st episode.

i don't know about that, since paul chaplin is still writing for it. he was one of the best writers on the staff, along with nelson. pre-murphy MST is also still pretty good.

Before Kevin Murphy is just the first season, right? I haven't seen too much from it but I only liked it as a curiosity.

I dunno, maybe I'll like it more as I go. The new Mads are good, it's the new hosts I can't connect with. It's not the worst Netflix reboot, which is now and forever With Bob and David, a show so bad I almost cried.

KTMA (season 0) and season 1. weinstein left after that, and then murphy came on board. weinstein was good, especially at 16, but age seemed a factor with fitting in.

i'm 5 episodes in, and i think i've seen the weakest one yet, and still enjoyed it well enough. i don't usually fanboy out on stuff but this has been the closest i've come. they all just seem to be totally all in and loving it, and that resonates.

there are some moments when they talk too much, but rifftrax has been guilty of that an awful lot as well.

I've pretty much completed the season, saving the Santa episode for Christmas time.

very impressed overall. some of the movies they picked were so audaciously horrendous, i can't believe i had never heard of them before. sometimes, the musical antics went over the top and felt more like "We're taking this to Broadway!". but i loved the energy, the commitment, and the genuine love the cast & crew had for bringing this back to life.

as i said with the live show, i think this is just flat out entertaining. sometimes moreso than the old show. these guys just have a ton of energy. felicia day and oswalt are both very good, and jonah really fits well. he doesn't stand out as a riffer, as i think all three (he and the bots) do an even job throughout the movie. but his "aw, shucks" demeanor works well in the host segments.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

this is how i'd rank the episodes (granted, i cannot rank the Santa episode since I haven't watched it yet)

1 - Cry Wilderness (2)
2 - Wizards of the Lost Kingdom (10)
3 - At The Earth's Core (14)
4 - Carnival Magic (12)
5 - Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II (11)
6 - Reptilicus (1)
7 - The Loves of Hercules (8)
8 - The Land That Time Forgot (7)
9 - The Time Travelers (3)
10 - Yongary: Monster from the Deep (9)
11 - Avalanche (4)
12 - Starcrash (6)
13 - The Beast of Hollow Mountain (5)

the middle episodes i thought were a little weak; i was really disappointed with "StarCrash" because the movie is so outlandish. but the riffing to me was a little too self-indulgent. it didn't let the movie breathe. "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" nearly put me to sleep, but there are some good jokes toward the end of the film.

"Cry Wildnerness" had me laughing my ass off, as well as "Carnival Magic". the "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom" films are jaw droppingly bad. I ranked these somewhat as a mixture of how fun bad the movie was and how good the episode was.

The first two were great. The next couple weren't great and I haven't been back yet. I think Reptilicus was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing about the janitor guy.

that's why you see my top 6 with the later episodes and the first 2. something about the middle just didn't click as much for me. "the loves of hercules" does have a lot of big laughs though...especially just...the movie itself.

ditto "carnival magic" and the "wizards" films.

Shit. Wish I had seen this. Reptilicus is one of my favorite old B films--mostly because I first saw it at the "bottle cap" movies (seven bottle caps and you got in for free at Ford City).

6 new episodes on Netflix this weekend. I enjoyed the reboot season last year overall, though it had its ups and downs. After watching 3 of the new 6 episodes I think that it really is coming together well. The writing seems a lot better and funnier, and the interactions between the mads, Jonah and the bots seem a lot more clever to me. I wasn't too sure about Kinga and Max last season, but they are winning me over a little at a time. My daughter has started watching with me, and she is really enjoying it too which is adding to the fun. I hope they have plans to release additional new ones more frequently, especially if they are only going to drop 6 at a time. I think it is really starting to capture some of the fun of the original series. The "Mac and Me" episode really was funny.

Did you check out the MST3K event at the Antheneum Theater a couple of weeks ago? Joel, Jonah and the bots on stage riffing on Deathstalker II. Very funny.

still have to watch "killer fish" and "ator" but through the first 4 episodes of "the gauntlet" i have to say "mac and me" is easily the best one. i'm glad they kicked it off with that one. like "reptilicus" it just really clicks.

i'm a little disappointed that they included an asylum film. "atlantic rim" is a really annoyingly bad movie and the asylum purposely makes their films like this. in the past, it was to get people to rent their movies thinking they were the actual film (mockbusters). but now i don't even know why they still make them, without video stores to distribute them. i mean are they really just making them for people who want to watch bad movie rip offs?

"lords of the deep" is only redeemable for the bizarre performance of priscilla barnes from "three's company". and the creature is pretty hilarious too.

"the day time ended" makes absolutely no sense and is painfully boring at first. but once the trippy weird shit starts happening it's watchable.

i think the fact that these seasons are released at once makes it a little difficult to get into a rhythm of watching it. when it was a weekly show, you didn't need to have a cadence to the choice of films. they could vary from sci-fi to horror to outrageous thriller/action movies. but when they're all stuck together in one release, it feels jarring to go from something like an 80's "E.T." rip off (which i had actually seen in theaters) to a modern rip-off movie and...another rip-off movie...to something like "the day time ended".

it's also hard to binge something like this because digesting not only the bad movie but also the riffing and everything...sometimes MST is better viewed 2-3 times because you miss a lot of jokes the 1st time watching.

so, i'm glad it's only 6 episodes this time. but i think if they renew it again, give the next season 8-10 episodes. 14 is probably too many, while 6 might leave you wanting a lot more.

i'll probably finish it up this weekend.

PRETTY NICE!
