Don't know if you heard, but ladies and allies of ladies should be watching this because it's very relevant and totally could happen any day now that Trump is president.

But for real, it's a pretty good show so far. I've seen the first five episodes. One of the only negatives about it, imo, is how cartoonishly unrealistic they make Gilead seem, which I guess I'm in the minority on since every review seems like they're obligated to say how horrifying it is because it's so realistic.

Pretty interesting show though. I'd recommend it. Elizabeth Moss is fantastic.

Part of me wanted to check this out. It's gotten some good reviews. Seemed a bit pretentious tho. Based on a book right?

I think it's fairly well known. I don't read and I've heard of it. Never read it

Seems interesting.

I'd never heard of it before the ads started bombarding me on my streaming apps.

Oh, and for those who don't want to give this a chance because they hate Julie DiCaro or whatever, it's worth mentioning the author of the original book owned Julie on Twitter:

It's not really relevant at all. It seemed more relevant at the time it was written during the Reagan presidency.

It would have been more relevant had they remade it with the villains as neo-liberals who utilized marthas and handmaids to facilitate "lean-in" feminism.

I taught it one year and the students hated it. Interestingly, some of the Muslim girls thought it was a shot at Islam (though it is pretty specifically focused on white, ultra-conservative North Americans).

Great concept, but it gets really boring halfway through.

The funny thing is, it's actually happened and happening with Islam.

I just always thought it was part of the Canterbury Tales. I guess I just dodged that bullet in HS.

It was a weird moment, that's for sure, to hear suburban girls (especially two who had, from what the faculty told me, an exceptionally difficult time adjusting to the hijab) defending Islam and attacking the writer....we had to discuss context, but they wouldn't let go.

I think it came out in '85. Didn't you graduate before that?

I'm certain Atwood was not thinking of Islam when she wrote it. It was a reaction to the rise of Christian evangelicals during the Reagan years. But hey, if the shoe fits...

No doubt about that. These were kids, so I can't judge their wackiness, but one of them is a Twitter warrior today....she espouses the same kind of stuff, with little regard to context...

Well, most sci-fi is genre-fiction trash that concerns itself more with playing to form than exploring humanity, so it's a low bar, but yeah, it's one of the rare books to transcend its genre and be taken seriously as literature.

well i'm not sure what sci-fi genre you're talking about but instantly "brave new world" and "we" come to mind as well as "1984" (even if you don't want to consider it sci-fi).

"the handmaid's tale" is in that conversation but to brazenly say it's easily the best? okay...

Yeah, Brave New World is right up there. Photo finish. Sorry, I got ahead of myself.

I kind of hate 1984 now.

the greatest sci-fi comes from asimov and bradbury mostly. then you also have philip k. dick, arthur c. clarke and brian aldiss. and those are the obvious ones.

i mean the list goes on before i say "Handmaid's Tale"...
