Plays now are automatically better than they used to be. It sounds great to say Shakespeare was good, but it's pretty dumb to say he's as good as Damien Chazelle, knowing what we know now.

In many respects, an episode of Bar Rescue could be considered a play: an owner who is failing to take care of the employees, employees who don't care anymore, and a desparate plea for help. A wise sage comes to help but the owner tells the sage he does not know a thing. The sage in his many lessons, teaches the owner and employees of their wrongs and then uses his magical powers to transform the bar. The owner takes on more responsibility and the employees are re-engaged in providing great service. We close with a well run bar that is making money. A true redemption story.

plays are awesome--nothing beats their energy. it's the musicals that make me question the value of human culture.

There have been good musicals in the past but I think musical theatre is pretty much dead. It was nothing but [Band]: The Musical! until some guy stretched the premise of a Simpsons gag:

SKINNER: And now, children, it's time for some rap music!
KIDS: yaaaaaaayyyyy!!!!
SKINNER: About the life and times of Alexander Hamilton!
KIDS: awwwwwwww...

into a full-length musical and everyone had to consider it one of the best musicals of all time because there had been nothing else for so long.

Chicago has had one of the best and strongest stage performance industries in the world for my entire life. Theaters like Steppenwolf have fostered so much talent and so many award winning shows that referring to them is almost cliché (and they still do great work). You could go to an out of the loop theater just about every night in this city and see an amazing show for $15. It's almost at the point where a movie is more expensive than a play and the quality in most cases is not comparable. I'm shocked that people will throw down $12+ for a crap movie but never think of going to the live theater.

Broadway in Chicago is like the Wrigley Field of the play industry, bringing in the buses from Iowa.
