I hated "Pine Barrens." And I know that many consider it one of the greatest episodes in the entire series.

But I think this came at a good time in the series. You got an episode with him, he's frustrated, maybe a little scared. Him and Chrissy had some outstanding banter. You just felt like you were freezing to death with them. I dunno, I liked it.

This has probably been mentioned before but I'm too lazy to read the thread.

This whole rift with Fring starts off so implausibly. Why on earth would Walt risk everything to intervene in Jesse's feud with the drug dealers? He had already been advised by both Mike and Fring to stay the course. Everything had gone swimmingly for Walt at the time - he had no need to rock the boat. So we're left to believe that the only driving factor for Walt to intervene was his fondness for Jesse. For Walt's character at that time in the show, it didn't make sense. His character was still concerned about his cancer and setting his fam up for the future. So again finding it hard to believe he'd risk throwing it all away for an associate whom up until that time he merely used as a means to an end.

Also, Hank bringing Walt along to spy on Fring and stuff like that was too conveninent.

2013 CSFMB ROY

I've been going back and listening to the excellent Breaking Bad Insider Podcasts, which is usually Vince Gilligan, editor Kelly Dixon, and assorted actors and directors tied in with each episode. I recall them mentioning the DEA is actually forbidden from taking civilians on ride-alongs (though Hank seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't care about the rules).

I just listened to the episode for "Hermanos," which is the one where Hector murders Gus's partner. What an amazing scene. Apparently three of the actors spoke fluent Spanish (Don Eladio, Bolsa, and Max), whereas Gus and Hector did not and had to learn the parts. That was a lot of dialog and emotion to have to get through in a language you do not naturally speak.

Great episode....I don't think the significance of that episode came across until Better Call Saul.
