Just showed my wife the Roddy Piper vs. Keith David fight scene for the first time in her life. She loved it. Great film. Love the ending.

Some of John Carpenter's best work. Kick ass soundtrack and action.

One of the first films where the protagonist dies, but he also wins.

One of my favorite movies that I found beyond terrible the first time I saw it. Now it's one if it's on the channel flipping stops. Been a while.

Best Carpenter flicks:

1) The Thing
2) They Live
3) Halloween
4) Prince of Darkness*
5) Escape from New York

I have not seen prince of darkness. My brother in law consistently gives me crap for it when it comes up.

No love for In the Mouth of Madness?

Agree on The Thing being #1 with a bullet.

I'd rate Prince of Darkness ahead of Halloween for how it combined theoretical physics, Alice Cooper, horror, and religion.

It's a trip. A movie that talks about Schrodinger's cat and has a lady basically get blasted with demon jizz.

I mean the scene isn't sexual and jizz is a metaphor.

It does have Alice Cooper kill a guy with a bicycle and other violence that may not be ok for an 8 year old.

"halloween" and "the thing" can be an interchangeable #1 and #2 for carpenter but i personally never liked "escape from new york". it just never really held my interest after the 1st act.

"assault on precinct 13", "big trouble in little china", and "in the mouth of madness" are classics, to me.

actually never saw "prince of darkness". i liked "the fog" for the most part. mainly tom atkins.

The vampire movie with James Woods is awesome.

Solid list, but it is unfortunately wrong as it doesn't have Big Trouble in Little China on there. My list.

1. The Thing
2. Halloween
3. Big Trouble in Little China
4. Prince of Darkness
5. Escape from New York
6. They Live

Dead Last - The Ward

John Carpenter is one of the best at actual horror through the use of suspense. That's why Halloween is so perfect as well as the Thing. He doesn't show too much too early and builds suspense to the right moments. Prince of Darkness is great in that way as well. The movie has a dark, foreboding atmosphere and just builds from the early scenes.

And along with Alice Cooper, it has Egg Shen and Wang from Big Trouble in Little China as well as the late, great Donald Pleasance.

Was released thirty years ago! (Actually, 29 and a half.) I'd like to see that fight scene re-enacted....

Drop the satire and add a happy ending and it would be just stupid enough to appeal to Hollywood sensibilities.

The black guy would have to be played by The Rock.

The love interest could be played by some actress who's being sexually exploited by a studio exec.

There will have to be a complete lack of cultural references so that the Chinese won't get confused.

For no reason at all, it won't be the sunglasses, instead there's gonna be an app that allows the hero to see aliens through his iPhone camera.
