I'll have to stick to my guns in backing my all-time favorite movie from my childhood:

The 1956 version of The Lone Ranger. It had a great story and plenty of action.

No better cowboy than fellow Chicagoan,Clayton Moore.

This will sound weird but I never liked John Wayne westerns and that's what he's known for.

Gary Cooper is my favorite cowboy.

Some of the spahgetti westerns are good too. There was a time some of these movies were made in Italian and dubbed into English.

I watched it for first time a few weeks back. I’m not a huge John Wayne guy but I wonder now if I would enjoy them more now vs when my dad watched them in my back when I was a kid.

John Wayne was an awful actor.

John Wayne and his acting ability does not seem to be what people come to love. I feel there is more of a sentimentality or a feeling that his movies are like a nap with your favorite blankie.

For sure.. there are too many times that I realize that my mom and dad did actually know what they were talking about when it came to a few things. Except for their love of bearded dogs.. I just can’t get on board with that.

He was godfuckignawful in The Quiet Man, which itself was godfuckingawful. But I was surprised how good he was in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.

He was.

I think his best actual acting jobs were in The Searchers or The Shootist. He's also very good in Red River but that movie didn't stick the landing.

And, of course, when he played Genghis Khan in The Conqueror.

He was good in that because he had Jimmy Stewart to carry most of the movie.

The Quiet Man was fine. It was basically a tourism promo video for Ireland, or at least an idealized American version of Ireland.

Did a good job at that.

The Quiet Man is an odd movie. At times it is a complete farcical comedy and other times it's a real drama. His dramatic scenes with Maureen O'Hara are very good.

But, of course, he's going to look silly in the comedy scenes. That's how they were written. It's one of Wayne's better efforts. John Ford always got the best out of Wayne.

I cannot believe I'm reading hate on the The Quiet Man.

Turned what could have been a good story into a farce. It was like watching a fucking musical comedy with its pirouetting and stupid sub-plots.

First, Quiet Man isn't a western. Obviously. The movie is good as a postcard of Ireland in color. The restored version is pretty vibrant. Wayne isn't really at home in that movie. But the character actors are great in that movie.

Westerns, Best and bear in mind I'm a pretty big John Wayne fan...
