Funny you should mention that....I actually hinted around about it and then simply asked for it, and after the Missus said "maybe," she promptly lost the bid. I did, however, receive a Virginian comic book in which Judge Garth calls Indians "redskins," which neither the character nor actor would ever do. Also, the Mad magazine parody was a gift to myself.

Next time ask zinabashfan... or Zina Bash. She probably watches on Encore westerns.

I wish she'd get back into the news....signed up for a Google Alert.....nothing. I'm even more impressed that she maintains her privacy.

Speaking of the old west. My son told me this story yesterday. Back in the old west a single bullet for a six shooter cost about 4 cents and a shot of whiskey about the same. A down on his luck cowboy without any money would go into a bar and put a bullet on the bar and ask the bartender for a serving of whiskey. THAT is the origination for the term "SHOT".

My all-time favorite Westerns are Josey Wales, Pale Rider and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The cinematography in Pale Rider is the best of the three, though the "Missoura boat ride" scene in Josey is great. Great casting of John Vernon as Fletcher in Josey. Was perfect for the part.

My pops loved westerns and especially John Wayne.

After he passed, we were cleaning out some of his stuff and found an almost brand new multi-DVD pack of JW Westerns.

My older brother gave him those as a Christmas gift a few years back. As siblings, we had a rule while sorting his belongings - if you gave it to Dad, you had first choice to take it back.

He thought about it for a couple days and eventually decided to donate them to the local Senior Center. MANY others of his generation are enjoying them today as well. Proud of my brother - that was a good call.

My brother and I met him when we were kids. We dressed up as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. One of my heroes, it was a total thrill! I remember - after I asked - my dad telling me that he was wearing aviator sunglasses instead of his signature mask because of some copyright issues, but I had no idea what the fuck he was talking about.

One of the first VCR movies I got when we got a VCR was a copy of Angel & The Badman starring John Wayne.

It was before he was anybody, really.

I always thought of it as a B&W version of The Witness.

I found the sequel to Outlaw Josey Wales that I just read about after wikipedia'ing TOJW. Seems Michael Parks (of Tarantino fame) played Josey in the 1986 sequel.

Was flipping channels yesterday during the weather watches and stumbled upon High Noon. Been a while since I had watched it last. Followed by a young John Wayne in The Desert Trail. It is so odd seeing him as a 20 something.

The guy who wrote the book wrote a second one, which sucked, which I guess this movie follows. Wales basically goes and shoots up Mexico.


He hardly looks like John Wayne in them early movies (which are about 45 minutes long). Looks like he is a skilled horseman, though.

High Noon would have been better had they let Lee Van Cleef talk! Waste of a bad guy. Great movie, though.

Wayne is just familiar enough when you see him to say, “hey, that guy is familiar” and then a split second latter go “hey, it’s John Wayne” while Lloyd Bridges in High Noon was just familiar enough for me to go “Hey, I know that guy.”

I'm pretty sure he grew up on the same block as Mike North. I think there's a little plaque in front of his house.

So encore is doing Fistfull of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More and I’m struck that one of the reasons he didn’t have a bigger role in High Noon was they thought his nose needed work. Maybe it’s because he got some iconic roles later but damn.. he good.
