tv show based on a book about an african american woman who experiences time shifting during moments of trauma from 2016 LA to an 1820 Maryland plantation

interesting concept even if not entirely original

the acting is pretty weak. The characters are a bit millenial, with things like them being shocked by people using what are now considered racial slurs and greater physical punishment in domestic relations. It's kind of a perfect representation of our times when the woman pulls her white boyfriend into the shift then chastises him that he can't possibly experience what she's experiencing. Meanwhile, the slaves have to remind her that she isn't experiencing their lives either.

the time shift is a family legacy. The woman comes from a broken home, with mental illness and both her parents dying. Her mom died with her dad in an accident but her mom's body was never found. Her mom shifted to the 1820's and never returned. Her grandma was thought to be mentally ill but she was probably shifting as well.

I'm about 7 episodes in. I wonder if this is all a mania caused by several generations of mental illness. The boyfriend also has past mental illness so they may be feeding off each other in creating this world.

I'll be interested to see where it goes. I read it wasn't renewed for another season. I think it was probably worthy of a longer look.

In conclusion, would mildly recommend.
