I really enjoyed the movie. But do agree the last hour really drags, but the first two hours were worth it. Take about 30 mins off the thing and it would be perfect.

i had seen saager's review from BP on the film, but held off on HiTB's video until i saw it, since we went yesterday.

i definitely liked a lot of it, but agreed with saager that the film trails off after the bomb testing sequence is over. the build-up to that was so great, that the rest of the film just seems like a really long coda.

in fact, the pace of the film completely falls off a cliff and becomes more an assembly of oscar bait scenes of big monologues and melodramatic quarreling. of course it was important to understand how oppenheimer got railroaded following the war, and the interrogation scenes are still pretty good. but i felt like all of that could've still been wrapped around the ultimate conclusion of witnessing the test of the explosion, and maybe in a final 5-minute scene after visiting truman (didn't realize how truman was that turned off by him), showing his regret of allowing the military to own the science and potentially release this kind of weapon on the world.

overall i still thought it was mostly a strong film. certainly will get a lot of oscar buzz. but i still wasn't really sure if i knew who oppenheimer the man was after seeing it. it's tough, because scientific introverts can be impossible to get to know...we do see things from his perspective. some of his decisions aren't really explained or understood.

but the first 2 hours go by very fast, and i was totally into it. the last hour really lagged.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Portions of my daughter’s review via text:

I busted out laughing several times. It was sooooo dumb

The gasp I heard (from the others in the theater) when “atomic bomb” was said… I wanted to turn around and ask if they were homeschooled. I can’t believe people think that that’s a huge reveal

They also treat Einstein like an MCU level Easter egg. It’s… definitely a movie! At 3 hours it felt a little too self-important. Christopher Nolan must think very little of my time if he thinks every minute of that movie needed to make the cut.

She said later on the phone that she thought the screenplay was very hamfisted at points as well.

One thing she said she liked was the cast and the acting, and some of the cinematography.

I’ll wait for it to stream.

When Russia and China eventually attack us, an entire generation will be watching it on their phone thinking its entertainment.

Wasn't that the point of the movie, to rush nuclear physics and beat the Nazis?

I'm pretty sure Wernher von Braun was a Nazi.

I thought it was brilliant...the temporal movements...the narrative...the editing in particular...the music was wonderful...and I would argue with anyone the performances of the lead characters, especially Downey

look this all becomes personal, I like blue you like green...

but i thought the execution of this film was tremendous

It was ok but I thought Ken was a bit over the top.

I too enjoyed it but was glad to have watched this at home so I could split it between two nights. I have trouble sitting through three hour movies.

We’re doing the same right now. Through the first 90 minutes, it seems to be scene after scene of people telling Tommy Shelby how brilliant & necessary he is while he quips/looks off into the distance.

Streaming on Peacock and caught it yesterday morning. Very well acted and shot. I didn’t know that much about the story and man. Long and pretty slow moving but found it very fascinating. Never ceases to amaze me how the government will do whatever it takes to get what they want and later throw people aside.

Nolan didn't waste getting those puppies out there on the screen. 30 minutes in and bam! Felt like too much too soon. The scene where they talk naked for a good 3 minutes was super awkward.

They show it in movies frequently, but I don't think most dudes are sitting in a chair naked post coitus. There is an almost zero chance that something isn't getting wiped into the seat in that scenario and a very good chance of multiple things

I'll never complain about seeing boobies in a movie, but it was pretty unnecessary...and yes the naked discussion was weird. Nolan must just be a perv, or he was trying to let us know that Oppenheimer was a perv. At one point in the movie, someone did call Oppenheimer a "womanizer"

We watched it this weekend. During the naked scene I turned to my husband and asked if he'd ever sit around naked and talk to me. Glad to know you all thought it was weird.

too many characters, appearing in rapid-fire order. since it's biographical, you're trying to to keep up with historical character #1, #2, is character #3 important?...etc...etc.

overall, interesting era and theme. 2 out of 4 from me.

I couldn’t stop thinking about how much Josh Garnett’s character looked like a young Jan-Michael Vincent to me.
