Man I was just thinking of a nice Friday night chilling with an 80s movie. Now I got one to watch, “Shoah”! Thanks Rolling Stone!

Gotta have a John Hughes film in the top 10 + Aliens, Full Metal Jacket. Tho FMJ kinda drags 2nd half, like most Kubrick films. But first half is endlessly re-watchable.


Rolling Stone does this on purpose to generate traffic, publish inane best of lists.

the premise itself is flawed. "Top Ten 80's Films"? Films that define the 80's, or the best films of the 80's? It's always subjective; but including sobering documentaries alongside rollicking fun movies makes no sense. I remember that's what Roger Ebert said about his omission of "Shoah" (speaking of) in his Best of 1985 list. Siskel had it as his #1. Roger didn't include it at all, justifying his decision because of what I said above. It was in a class all its own.

"The Thin Blue Line" is a great documentary, also, but the 80's had a bunch of great documentaries.

I'm actually surprised they didn't include "The Shining".

Ultimately, you'd have to come up with Top Ten lists that have specific categories. Top Ten Dramas, Comedies, Documentaries, Sci-Fi, Horror...just like any decade. This list doesn't at all represent the decade in a comprehensive way.

Wall Street used to be in my top five all time, but it's probably been 15 to 20 years since I've seen it. Something tells me that if I watched it now, it wouldn't hold up.

That’s an interesting question. Do movies revolving around specific eras hold up? Even Spinal Tap, for instance. Half the board didn’t live in the 70s when drummers were dying and excess was essential to the rock & roll lifestyle.

I work with 3 women between 25-32, and I’d be willing to bet that none of them have seen the movies listed in this thread.

It's not just the "movies revolving around specific eras" dynamic. I think Stone's heavy handed direction probably hasn't aged well.

I saw it as a kid and loved it. Sometimes that influences the perception. The music was great and there were a lot of future excellent actors, including Anthony Munoz.

Blood Simple

Do the Right Thing was made for people in 80s Naperville. Sorry, Brad, Chip, Taylor, and Brooke, it was a decent film (and it's not the film's fault that it is still over-hyped), but it's fake-complex, like most Spike Lee movies.

The worst movie of the 80s was Caddyshack. One of the funniest, but as a movie, garbage.

Best film soundtrack???
