Its no surprise its happened. The first 3 seasons were the best and they were fairly close to the source material. Once they jumped past the books and invented their own storylines, its gotten worse. I think GRRM told them "X sits the Iron Throne at the end" and they've just done their own thing after that.

It was but it also was the biggest setup episode in the series and they had to find a way to get all the pieces in the right places. This was them fixing the issues created by the books and finally bringing the entire world and cast of characters into the same storyline for the last episodes.

When we view the season finale and then what is setup for next season I think we'll realize that all of it was now possible because of this episode and that quest.

I think FF is full on genius when it comes to his BCS love, but these comments are just as retarded. BCS is a very good show, but not even anywhere near the same class as BB or GOT.

I've never seen it. But that is the feeling I get when I see it discussed. Like, it is a fine show. But in a world with so many amazing shows currently available...why go out of your way for it?

Completely disagree. This episode isn't going to be retroactively redeemed if next week is awesome. It was a perfect example of just how stupid and lazy the GOT writers have gotten.

You're getting into Bucky Chris/Apple territory in terms of defensiveness. It's ok to think this show isn't flawless.

I'm not being defensive. You won't even entertain the idea that with extra context we will discover why this episode had to be how it was. You have spent most of the season calling the writing stupid and lazy even when the point here is that the writing of that specific episode will likely have solid reasoning why it had to be done.

I didn't think it was a particularly strong episode either. I just think that when we look at it based on what it setup we will understand that it was vitally important to pretty much everything that happens. I've read a little bit too much of r/freefolk to feel comfortable giving my expanded thoughts on that prior to the season finale but I think you are wrong to completely write off the possibility that the "stupid and lazy" writing was not done with specific purposes in mind.

I'm far from the only one with this criticism. Most critics agree the writing has been a pretty glaring weakness this season.

If you read all my comments I think you'll realize I haven't been overly critical. It's a very good show that is struggling towards the finish line. Very common

From the moment they decided the plan to capture a wight and bring it to Cersei, it was a stupid plan.

What guarantee is there that a) Cersei will believe what she's seeing is real, and b) that she'll care. Plus why was this the only way?

Nothing that happened this week, nor nothing that could happen next week would change that.
