In 1987, one of the strangest things in television history occurred. Chicago Television stations were automatically taken over by a Mysterious Masked Man. Was this just a couple of amateur hackers playing around, or something more sinister?

Don’t want it to be overshadowed by the lameness of a HY post, but yeah, it was a pretty cool/important moment for television.

About twenty years ago, I mentioned to someone that I used to watch Doctor Who on Channel 11, and what I meant is that I watched about five episodes over ten years. But the next day, a box full of VHS tapes--the Kodak ones with the yellow stickers, the ones, purchased from Walgreens, with the different sized dots on the box--appeared on my porch. The first (and maybe only) one I watched had this goofy interruption on it. It was disturbing and hilarious, and I actually remember watching it live.

Whoever was behind the mask mentioned Chuck Swirsky, I think, before getting spanked with a fly swatter. What the hell. The Sun-Times said that, theoretically, the stunt cost over $100,000 to pull off.

Saw it when it happened live on channel 9.

Next day everyone thought it was Kevin Mathews.

Loop phone lines were lit up talking about it.

Back then the nightly local news sports segment was invaluable. I knew the staggered time the sports would air on each station like clockwork, and click around to see each. People didn't avoid the local news like nows shit shows demand.

Sheesh. Those were the days. I know the Midwest closes at about 7 pm on Sundays, but even tv closed at 11:00 on Sunday nights. It was Dave Allen or the Bears shows and then 8 channels of nothing (later changed to 40 channels of nothing when we got cable in 1987).

Remember that Nite-Owl show on Channel 32? Man, I though humanity was going somewhere when I finally woke myself up to watch that. Here's one where the BrewCrew were in first play, and Pete Vukovich was 15-4. They even had ET watching!

is there a guy who has had a more stress free, well paid career than Dan Roan?

The good old days when working for WGN was a lifetime job

I just saw where he's retiring soon.
