Any one else catch this HBO movie that premiered recently? I caught it On Demand yesterday and
was overall impressed. This is a Hemingway that many of us probably didn't know that much about,
well, those of us that have enjoyed his novels over the years. I thought the acting by Clive Owen and
Nicole Kidman was really good. These two had a real love hate relationship with one another and
lived a pretty exciting life together, finding themselves in a number of precarious situations. A couple
of the things that bothered me slightly was how the movie moved from color to almost a brown and
white shot and then back to color. There must have been a reason for it but it never dawned on me.
Also they use quite a bit of actual old war footage and they kind of CGI these characters in there. It
was a neat idea but was never convincing enough to look absolutely realistic. It was pretty long at
2.5 hours but if you were ever curious about Hemingway and what kind of guy he was at his peak
of an adventurer, it is worth your while. I wouldn't be surprised to see both actors up for Emmy Awards.
Other top notch actors I recognized were Tony Shaloub who is great in everything as well as Robert
Duvall.
