I saw the Barstool bus heading for the tollway this morning. I'm surprised they (some of them at least) stayed here overnight instead of heading to Chicago.

Fine but comparing Barstool to the leader in sports that has been around for half a century is unfair. I mean, there was a point at which the Google search bar first appeared, and you could say yeah but Microsoft is a lot bigger.


What Barstool has created is pretty impressive. More so now in the world of SJW’s……

Gotcha, yeah they are not nor do they seem to aspire to be ESPN. I think going on all in on podcasting and gambling was a smart move. Live sports broadcasting is great, but the cost for tv rights now is out of control. By branding in the gambling area, they are catching the wave of legalization, and podcasting is very low cost distribution.

I only listen on rare occasions, but their programming is entertaining.

while kind of a "firing" of sorts, I think this is good for barstool.

It's a win-win for Barstool and Penn.

Penn still got 3 years of customer acquisition for a cheaper price than their competitors spent on ads from 2020-2023. Portnoy and Stoolies now get their company back. They have full ownership, the $640 million they were paid by Penn, and the ability to do what they wish with a sports media company that per Penn's quarterly filings was profitable in it's own right.

I don’t know how deep a bench of advertisers they have. Even PMT fills a lot of ad space with promos for the Barstool store. And I’d imagine the gambling ads may slow down, although maybe they open the door to more potential companies with Penn out.

It seems weird to me a public company would just give away something that had value, but who knows.

Yeah, there aren't a lot of ad buyers chasing 70 year old consumers. Succession made light of this with their ATN stand-in for Fox News when Tom said "The median age of our audience is 68. The ads are all adult diapers and shit pills."

Companies will throw top dollar to get their products in front of Barstool's 18-39 male audience.

Heck, they already do so, which is why Barstool remained independently profitable while still owned by Penn and that was while not being able to take paid advertisements from gambling companies as anyone who would buy such an ad would be competing with Penn and wouldn't have been greenlit.

isn't barstool just that pardon my take show dan and todd do? I think they had live event bum fights happening for a while. dunno if they still do those. probably sell t-shirts too. so it's a podcast + bum fights + a sports threadless.

They do probably about 3 RnR events a year.

They have the #1 hockey podcast, #1 golf podcast, #1 overall sports podcast, and a bunch of other podcasts that all do pretty well. Plus their blogs draw a lot of traffic through social media. When you have millions of followers on different socials, you can get a lot of traffic and monetize that.

Podcasting is high margin as the overhead costs are low and the ad placement demands are high, especially for the target demo.
