Three stories I saw from Deadspin's lineup yesterday:

The NHL is still Very Racist (via Sam Fels)
https://deadspin.com/the-nhls-diversity ... e=_twitter

MNF and Men are still Very Sexist (via Julie DiCaro)
https://deadspin.com/since-half-of-nfl- ... 1843548549

BREAKING: The NFL is Very Racist
https://deadspin.com/nfls-broken-system ... e=_twitter

Did the new owners do away with the Stick to Sports edict, or are these writers just getting away with this stuff because pro sports are in lockdown? All these pieces seem very post-peak, "LeBron is a Genius for saying Fuck Trump"-Deadspin.

Now a 19-word title to tell us, what? You guessed it, NCAA football is also racist!

"The NFL Isn't Only Place With Diversity Issues Among Its Football Coaches, The College Game Is Just As Bad" (I'm not joking, that's the title)

Quote:
In no way is this an attack on Jordan’s competitive nature. He was as ferocious of a competitor that the sports world has ever seen.

But, the context is different. Jordan was undefeated in the Finals during his career. However, he was favored in all six of those Finals appearances. James, on the other hand, was an underdog in seven of the nine finals he has played in and has still managed to win three titles.

Isn't this just taking the scenic route to saying he lost to better teams except for the one time Golden State blew the 3-1 lead? Or is he giving the advantage to the Spurs in 2013, so that LeBron overcame the odds in '13 and '16 but botched it in '11? Either way, Jordan 6-0 forever, stone-cold killer, best ever, suck it.

Quote:
The point is simple.

I’m tired of the lack of objectivity in comparing these great players. Where saying bogus statements about one player is supposed to enhance another.

Don’t fall into the trap.

Jordan and James are both cultural titans, athletic artists, and insanely competitive basketball players.

They just did it in different ways and in different circumstances.

"Fellas, fellas! They're both great in different ways! (But LeBron is still better.)"

If anything, the college game is markedly worse. "Weather report: it's not just hot in Florida, it's hot at the equator, too."

If that guy actually watched closely and read between the lines a bit, Jordan did that to sell shoes.

Being remembered as the GOAT was just a fun by-product for him.

Maybe when that guy gets older than 24 years old, he might understand something about what he just watched.

Does anyone proofread these columns? The number of mistakes is embarrassing.

CLTV was derisively nicknamed Children Learning Television. Deadspin feels like Children Learning Journalism.

The place is overtly political now. So odd. And I’ve read some of the pieces, and they suck. What a waste of what used to be a fun place with interesting takes.

Have their web design guys been living in a cave since 1995? Even this place looks more modern.

The new Deadspin is so hilariously stupid. The Patriots are boring?

Dovonan Dooley seems like a really deep thinker.

Yes.

Basketball lends itself to personal drama better than any other sport: it has the smallest cast and it tends toward big personalities. The '90s Bulls had larger-than-life personalities in Jordan and Rodman. Football is more difficult because of the huge roster size and the anonymity most players necessarily toil in.

The Patriots make it harder still because their organizational philosophy is about total buy-in, complete subsumption of the individual into the whole for the greater good. (It's also about cheating.) The masterminds of the Patriots are a grumpy guy who doesn't like to talk to anyone and some weird old guy who hides from the public altogether. And Brady himself? Good god, what a vacuous bimbo he is. There's really nothing there. And if you thought The Last Dance was compromised by Jordan's editorial involvement, can you imagine what Belichick and Handjob Bob will do?

For reasons you describe, I think the Cowboys of the 90s would be a better subject. In addition, you have a similar separation of time.

Yeah, that would be the closest football analogue. Needless to say, a dedicated film crew on the '85 Bears would have been amazing. I just don't see how you make a miniseries about an organization that, by design, is allergic to individuality, ego clashes, and fun.

Resurrected Deadspin is like if they rebooted the original suck dot com in the form of Rex Chapman's twitter timeline as curated by Whistler.

A five time champion team that featured: Gronk, Aaron Hernandez, Randy Moss, plus the Brady craziness is not boring.

See, one would think that, but it actually was really boring. The most interesting things to happen to the Patriots were them getting caught cheating, and they even managed to stifle a lot of that.

I can see people being tired of the Patriots being legitimate Super Bowl contenders for so long, and even if they didn't necessarily dislike them wanting to see someone else win for the sake of change, but I would never have considered them boring. There was plenty of drama on and off the field for people who like one or the other, or both.

Sound good?"

oops they did it again
Curious Hair wrote:
Here it is, "The Hockey Players You Think Are Good Are Actually Bad." Sam Fels is on the case, so I'm surprised it's not just "all of them, all of them are Actually Bad, the only good thing is the NBA." It's in the single most indulgent and unreadable format, the "post the transcript of a group chat and call it an article" format. Both The Ringer and the other Gawker sites love to crap these out, laboring under the misconception that their writers' conversations are so interesting that we readers would be blessed if only we could be a virtual fly on their virtual wall. They think they're giving us the Algonquin Round Table. What they're really giving us are a thousand line breaks and people saying "Yeah.", "Wow.", and "Well anyway." Imagine selling a book that was just printouts of this board. You can't, it would be unreadable shit. But in the case of "The Most Overrated NHL Players Since 1990," they have to do it this way, because if you didn't do it that way, then oops, you wrote a listicle, and if you wrote a listicle, oops, you're Bleacher Report. People aren't supposed to know that New Deadspin is Bleacher Report.

In a past life, I did a lot of AIM chats. They were fun, and I made a few friends4life. And there were lots of funny exchanges and quick banter, and I think we were all duly impressed with our running jokes and gang-ups on people. A few years later, I found a transcript of one of them and it didn't hold up at all. Outside of the moment, with no real-life timing, there was no humor, no enjoyment, nothing impressive whatsoever. It was insipid. If I could figure this out, why can't these twats?

Also, I don't think Paul Konerko was rated particularly highly (much less overrated) by anyone outside of White Sox fans. And really, he was only overrated when he morphed from PK into GIDPK towards the end of his career.

Well, the thing about the '71 Pirates is that everyone gives all the credit to their white players.
