That's the NFL/NHL Network template, they pick local attractive, but not beauty queen types, that do know enough about football to at least move the conversation along on a panel show.

Picking former local/state pageant winners on looks alone is for the regional sports networks, if they fail they get insulted by local Bernstein types, if they succeed there are plenty of sideline reporter gigs at the networks where you have one or two attractive young ladies on either sideline during every game. If your really good you can eventually get yourself on Dancing with the Stars.
