Mike North 'Scores' In Las Vegas
Friday, 25 January 2013 13:17

One-time Chicago radio superstar Mike North is hitting the Las Vegas strip. No, he won't be replacing Celine Dion, but he will be doing radio work from there often from the new "Score!" radio studio, located within the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

"Score! Be The Legend" is a new Las Vegas attraction found inside the pyramid-shaped Luxor Hotel. Perfectly located on the Luxor's mezzanine level, between the "Titanic" exhibit and the food court, "Score! Be The Legend" is an interactive sports exhibit. It contains a 10,000 square foot sports Hall of Fame, which contains over 200 pieces of rare memorabilia from other national Halls of Fame, including football, basketball, hockey, and boxing. There are exhibits within it, allowing visitors to test their agility with college football & basketball combine try outs, a baseball speed pitch, hockey stick/puck handling on a small ice rink, change a racing tire on a NASCAR pit stop, and much more. Along with the major attraction of a sports Hall of Fame, there is a sports-themed retail store, and a new, state-of-the-art broadcast facility, of which, Mike North is managing partner.

The radio studio has four seats and can also be converted into a television studio. It has been set up so that radio stations looking to do remote broadcasts from Las Vegas, need supply nothing more than their hosts and their laptop computer. Most everything is there waiting to be used, making this a much more affordable method for radio stations to do remotes from 'Vegas. It also allows fans to watch the radio show take place live from just outside the Hall of Fame.

The radio station officially opened a few weeks back and has already been used by various radio companies. The syndicated "The Nick Bonsanto Show" of the Byline Radio Network is doing their daily shows from the "Score!" studio. Fox Sports Radio (FSR) is already planning on doing over 150 shows a year from the location. FSR will be having their new midday star Jay Mohr broadcasting from the "Score!" radio studio a week from today, on February 1st. Additionally, Mike North himself will be broadcasting his weekend FSR shows from there on Super Bowl weekend, February 2nd and 3rd. North plans on doing his FSR programs from the Las Vegas studio approximately once per month.

In the early 1980's Mike North was working construction jobs in Las Vegas. In the evenings, he would stop by the Frontier hotel & casino, where he would watch sports talk pioneer Lee Pete do his radio show live. (Pete was a Las Vegas radio legend, talking sports on KDWN-AM from 1970-1998 -- long before sports talk became a fashionable radio format.) A private conversation between North and Pete back then helped inspire Mike North to get into radio a few years later. North now returns to Las Vegas where his radio dreams first began around 30 years ago.

The "Score! Be The Legend" exhibit was the concept of Mike North's business partner, CEO Jim Beckman. The idea started over three years ago, as Beckman obtained permission and partnerships from the various national sports Halls of Fame to participate in the Las Vegas experience. The build-out of the "Score!" space alone cost over $2 million. Beckman also began the process to copyright the name of the exhibit three years ago, long before Mike North was ever involved with it.

North tells CRM that he does find it funny that once again, he is involved with a radio outlet called "Score." Of course, Mike North was a top-rated sports talk personality with WSCR-AM/The Score from its inception in January 1992, until his exit from the station in June 2008.

As managing partner for the new "Score!" radio studio, Mike North is now actively seeking corporate sponsorship for it. This could include naming rights of the studio, having logos prominently displayed for the Luxor's millions of monthly visitors, having their company's name said live on radio shows nationwide, and more. The hope is with the right sponsorship partners in place, North could make the radio studios available for radio shows nationwide to do remotes from there for free or for a minimal cost. Interested businesses looking to be part of Las Vegas' newest attraction can contact North at 847-823-1455 or via email at Mike@NorthToNorth.com.

Did you love him in Vegas when he was working construction? And stopped at the Fremont to see a radio show?

I listened to North for years as well, never heard him mention anything about Living in Vegas and you would think he would talk about it all the time as if it makes him some type of wagering expert?

This is my first hearing about it?

I'm willing to bet he visited Vegas while he was working construction or something here, watched this guy do his show, and that he is being purposefully vague about it in order to sell some sort of Vegas backstory. This is the signature move of his recent coworker, Mancow.

Why don't you ask him yourself next time you're out that way. :P

If I had known I would have....the best part is that the make him sell the ads for the place

I dont know every aspect of this radio thing, but when a hotel invites a radio station out they comp them for everything, rooms, etc and give them the space to broadcast. So while it sounds like a good idea for the hotel, not sure what North is going to sponsor? The studio? TONYS DELI STUDIO!

Hasa anyone here read his book? It would probably be mentioned in there, no? If it is a boldfaced lie, he should be called out on it.

Maybe he was in Vegas one day and his luggage had one of those little locks on it, he went to get a screwdriver to open it and he considers that construction?

Mancow cooked up all kinds of bullshit. "Theater of the mind." But it's a lot easier for Mancow to spin some nonsense in Chicago since he's not from here and I once heard him refer to "North Street" on air. Where the fuck is that?

Too many people know all about Mike North. Did he fly out to do construction between slinging hot dogs and locking black kids out of the gym at Pottawatomie Park?

I Guess North forgot about vegas in his reader article as well...

plus some new stuff you never heard?

Bebe and North scanned the classified sections until they found something with potential. A woman had a hot dog stand for sale at the corner of Karlov and Belmont. She wanted $10,000 for it. The Norths waited her out and wound up buying the place for $5,000 they'd saved up. They ran it for two and a half years, and North also had a little sideline going. "I dealt out parlay cards. I had pools. That kept the guys coming back. I also talked sports across the counter. That's where I got my training for this job."

Bebe and Mike sold out in 1980 for $40,000. "The place went out of business six months later," North says. "They changed things." Bebe and Mike took a road trip to California for a month and a half, bought another hot dog stand, kept it three years, sold it, took another trip, and bought an old car wash at Milwaukee and Keeler, about two blocks from Schurz High School. The Norths built their new restaurant, Bebe's, on the site.

"We had the place eight and a half years," North says. "We were just a small neighborhood joint. We wrote letters to people saying we had a great hot dog--we did our own PR. We were named 'best hot dog' by Rolling Stone magazine. 'Best brownies' by Pat Bruno of the Sun-Times. USA Today--'best hot dog stand in Chicago.' I had all the top hot dog stand owners come in just to see where this place was."

If their hotdog stand was so great: 1. why isn't it still around? 2. why didn't they expand like Portillo's?

I had never heard of him ever working construction anywhere nor living in Las Vegas at anytime. Those two bits of information would have definitely been handed out during the Score days as they would have furthered his "regular guy" image.

What we did hear during the Score days was that he worked with the Park District, was in the army, and owned the hot dog stand. The three hot dog stands have a time line of about 15 years. He started at the Score in his 30s. He joined the army out of high school. THat does not leave a lot of room for his fear and loathing in las vegas days.

It's a scam to let him take a tax free trip to Las Vegas once a month. In addition, if you look at the financials on this project, I promise you see Beebee North with a paid position. Mike was always a guy who tried to squeeze every penny out of everything so I think this is just business as usual rather than financial desperation.

I know we have had the Murphy Lake updates at this place over the last few years. However, the guy made 15-20 million in his radio career. The lake properties probably only set him back 2 million. I'm sure the las vegas properties couldn't have been much more of a hit than that. He also built his dream house in Park Ridge. So, even after all those big hits he'd still have banked close to double digits in millions.

I seem to remember him at 1.75 per year for about five years and that number getting bumped higher when he took mornings for another couple of years. He was also near 1 per year for the few years preceeding that contract and in the mid six figures before that. His only bad pay day was the first 1-2 years at the Score. Even that last contract they offered him was for 800K.
