Would love to get him drunk and on Dan Patrick's show. That would be all time good radio with the stories I'm sure he has.

I'm going to guess Bleacher Report will give him the keys to the kingdom.

As long as he continues his Monday guess the lines with Cousin Sal podcast I have no opinion on his departure.

Oh, well, no more podcasts with Zach Lowe where BS' bad basketball opinions are corrected. Those were entertaining episodes so that kinda sucks.

I would think whatever umbrella TNT is under would be alluring given his love of the NBA. I think they're under CBS given how the 2 networks pair up for the NCAA tournament. He could then start at CBSsports.com before starting a new Grantland-type of site.

I agree about the Cousin Sal podcast. That's a Monday staple, or should I say, WAS a Monday staple. No way in hell that continues unless Sal follows him, which is doubtful given Kimmel is on ABC.

I think Grantland is going with Simmons. Skipper is sick of it.

He said it'll continue, but I find it hard to believe that it will. They'll keep a few writers around and fold them into the rest of the big happy family. I'm guessing Molly Lambert will not be one of them.

“It long ago went from being a Bill Simmons site to one that can stand on its own,” Skipper said.

Haha Grantland's gone. Jonah Keri is so screwed, that was the only place he'd fit. He uses too many #'s to move to ESPN or FS1 but he's too dense for Fangraphs or BP. Vice Sports is the only place I could see him going, along with 90% of Grantland.

You've been saving that as long as you've been alive. Grats.

A bunch of people are about to find out that while Gawker and Vice look like so much fun to work at, Shane Smith and Nick Denton aren't gonna pay shit. Chuck Klosterman made out like a bandit here, little fucker.

Bills Simmons is vocal about not giving two shits about college hoops.

So I don't see anyone picking him up to augment their college hoops coverage.

Simmons should take 6 months/a year, join up with Carolla's podcast company and do no-holds barred slam-casts about ESPN et al before going back inside some corporate nerf-word zone.

What's Jay Mariotti doing these days?

Always figured Grantland was ESPN's payback / reward to Bill Simmons for brainchilding the 30 for 30 franchise

Always a bad idea to have a separate branded site. An article on Grantland island provides little to no extra traffic to ESPN.com. Having people go to ESPN.com to read an article about the NBA / NFL / MLB etc gives ESPN.com the chance to push other related ESPN.com content to the reader.

Picking fights with Simmons, I'd guess. I saw someone re-Tweet this from Mariotti:

Jimmy Kimmel created Bill Simmons as he is today; bringing him out to LA to work on Kimmel's late night show exposed Simmons to the culture & industry he'd tap to generate 30 for 30.

Patriots Super Bowl wins, Red Sox ending the curse, capped off with the Celtics winning an NBA title helped Simmons become and remain sports-blogger-in-chief at ESPN.

If Simmons had been from Minneapolis and his teams were Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and Wild...

btw, Jason Whitlock? ESPN had a sense of humor they'd install Whitlock as Editor-in-Chief of Grantland to replace Simmons. Hilarity would ensue:

Simmons has always hinted that he could be an edgy, take-no-prisoners columnist if only he could escape the suffocating strictures of the Mothership, so I bet his writing will become really interesting now.

ESPN running the Simmons firing on Sportscenter with a statement from some ESPN big-wig. Reads like they had no intention of renewing Simmons contract.

He spread myths about Reinsdorf, and was a big Thibs supporter. And LOOK: clearly unhappy with his own bosses.

Well he will never make as much money as he did at ESPN. Hopefully he realizes that.

I love Deitsch mostly due to his dislike of First Take. We're kindred spirits that way. Always read his Monday column on sports media. He chimed in today with his thoughts on Simmons.

Awfulannouncing said Simmons didn't see this coming. His contract wasn't up until September and he got blind-sided.

Who the hell is Bill Simmons? I've never seen or heard him.
