Even Nas and Seacrest have accepted this . I hope, the guy isn't a starter.

One sportsbook, however, has decided to refund bets previously placed on (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky to win the league's MVP award.

Via NBC 5 in Chicago, the PointsBet Sportsbook (which offers betting in New Jersey and Iowa) has offered to pay back the money. While turning the concept of wagering on its head, it works as a great P.R. tool, aimed at getting free advertising (like this post) and persuading bettors ideally to re-spend their money (and then some) on other bets.

 Even the house feels bad about taking people's money over Mitch!

This was a good long read, even if a lot of it might be common knowledge. Most damning excerpts for me:
Quote:

In fact, coach John Fox rated the Clemson star as his top quarterback in the 2017 class. So did quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone.

But ultimately, Ryan Pace and Josh Lucas had fallen harder for Mitch (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky, believing the North Carolina quarterback had greater pocket presence and accuracy.

Watson sensed early on the Bears’ interest in him was minimal and shrugged past it. People in his camp, however, were perplexed. Quincy Avery, one of Watson’s private quarterback coaches and a close confidant, scratched his head.

“It just seemed like a big mistake on their part,” Avery said.

If the Bears were truly on the hunt for a franchise-changing quarterback, Avery wondered, why wouldn’t they do the full gamut of homework on a two-time recipient of the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the top quarterback in college football? Why hadn’t the Bears held a private workout with Watson or taken him to dinner as they had with (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky and Patrick Mahomes?

Instead, they met with Watson during the assembly-line interview process at the combine and for a bit after his pro-day workout. That was it.

“Honestly,” Avery said, “I thought that either they had some kind of wild process where they were going to try to sneak under the radar and grab Deshaun because they had heard so many positive things about him. Or it was an organization with a bunch of dysfunction that wasn’t prepared to be successful or didn’t have the pieces in place to truly take the next steps.”

Quote:
In the Bears’ ideal world, (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky would soon break out of the slump that has defined his third season and rod through the mental clog that has impeded his growth. All it may take, the organization believes, is one big play or one clutch drive or one exciting win to get things pointed back in a positive direction.
Isn't this the same belief that was stubbornly held about Rex and Jay for years?

That is so depressing. Fox could see it but Pace couldn't. And he's in charge of finding the next one.

This is the problem when you hire a GM who is learning on the job. You had your choice of quarterbacks in that draft. Work them all out.

Rex was hurt so often, I think 2006 was his first full season yeah? So I could see wanting to give him another shot. Plus he helped win two playoff games and make a Super Bowl. They added Griese, went back to Orton, and seemed to move on from Rex a lot quicker than they did with Jay.

With Cutler, the talent and arm was there without question. It was just a matter of how many times he would turn the ball over.

Mitch is not a franchise guy. He cannot be handed the starting job going into next season unless he miraculously morphs into an MVP candidate during the second half of this season.

The other part that stands out from the article is how committed Pace was to secrecy in his search for a quarterback, even at the expense of a more rigorous evaluation process. The authors note how in-depth the Chiefs and Texans were in evaluating guys at their headquarters and doing extended exercises on reading defenses and recalling plays, while Pace is being so stealthy he doesn't have anyone to Halas Hall and only did on campus workouts and private dinners. And then despite that secrecy to keep anyone in the league from knowing he wanted a quarterback, he still had to trade up just to be safe!

It really makes him sound a lot more like Emery trying to be the smartest guy in the room (or for a current similar example, Dave Gettleman) than I had realized.

Didn't realize you had a problem with the KC model.

The fact that Fox had the better opinion on the next QB is really depressing.

What's even more depressing, aside from Pace choosing Mitch over Mahomes and Watson, is he thought Mike "The Neck" Glennon was a good QB as well.

What's even MORE depressing is the 45 million he gave him.

When was the last time a Bears first round QB worked out? When was the last time the Bears drafted a serviceable starting QB? It was Kyle Orton in 2005 in the fourth round. We actually had better luck not drafting a QB in the first round, lol. My Bears executive spin dial says that we can draft QBs in rounds lower than the first and have just as much success or more.

Grossman was serviceable and went to a Super Bowl.

No. Orton should have been the QB in the superbowl.

Also, Rivera should not have switched the sides of the field of Peanut and Nate. This was the bigger mistake. Manning was worse than normal in big games. Peanut and Nate each had interceptions in their hands, but their instincts were to turn the other way. This subtle difference was just enough that they both uncharacteristically dropped those interceptions. Those interceptions would have crushed Manning. We would have won that superbowl.

You know what Orton had that Rex did not have?
The ability to stand over 5 ft 8 inches and actually see the field.

Despite having a decent arm, Rex was not tall enough nor durable to be an NFL quarterback. Orton could take a hit and he protected the football. I also would have taken Orton over Rex.

They don't make that Super Bowl with Orton playing the season.

The defense and Devin Hester were responsible for that team making the Super Bowl.

Yes, but the offense was somewhat serviceable. Orton didn't have the arm. He was not good on play action. If you had said Brian Griese....I'd agree with you. But not Orton.

You could pretty much predict that Rex would turn over the ball twice, especially if we were down in points. We were better off with a smart ball protector.
