Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher believes his former team is cursed...

“The Lovie Smith Curse” to be exact.

In an interview with Tiki Barber and Brandon Tierney on CBS Sports Radio, Urlacher cited the departure of Smith after the 2012 season as the point where things began to awry for the Bears. He also said he’s wondered what exactly the team is doing with their decisions this offseason.

“I like to say it’s the Lovie Curse,” Urlacher said. “Because since he left, (the Bears have struggled). He got fired being 10-6. I think they fire him either way. Even if we go to the playoffs, I think they fire him. I don’t think the GM (Phil Emery) liked the way he coached the football team.

“The guy’s a winner. I love playing for him. I don’t know what the identity of that team is. They sign (Mike) Glennon, then they draft a kid No. 2 (Mitchell (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky). I don’t know what (they’re doing). It’s confusing.”

The Bears have certainly struggled since Smith was fired following the 2012 season. They haven’t posted a winning record in any of the four seasons since and are on their second head coach since then as well. The 3-13 record last season was the worst by a Bears team since the schedule expanded to 16 games in 1978.

Chicago made the playoffs three times during Smith’s tenure, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. The 10-6 season posted by the Bears in 2012 was the fourth-best record in nine years under Smith. Nevertheless, Emery decided to change course after the year.

Urlacher also defended former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and said he was just as surprised as anyone by Cutler’s decision to move into the broadcast booth instead of continuing his career. He also said he hopes (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is as good as his draft position would tend to suggest.

“I hope this kid is unbelievable,” Urlacher said. “I hope Mitch (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is the best quarterback of all time. He looks like a stud. He’s 6-2, 6-3, put together, good-looking kid, he seems really nice – I hope they do really well. Their defense is going to be good this year. They were good last year and they had so many young guys play that it’s only going to help them this year.”

Trestman had them on the brink of a playoff appearance their 1st season. The last game was against the Pack with that fumble that nobody on the Bears chased causing a collapse.

I agree with Brian.

I don't mind the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky selection, but Urlacher is right. Firing Lovie was a terrible decision in retrospect.

I always thought it was the horrible drafting curse.

Don't forget about the poor choice of free agents curse.

Can you prove the curse isn't real? They were a good offense away from being a SB team when he was fired. Now they're about 5 years away from being a playoff team. The curse is real.

HH almost single handedly destroyed Adrian Peterson's career one season. He forced AP to fumble 3 different times in one season while starting for the injured Urlacher.

But Hillenmeyer has been a starter since Urlacher suffered a season-ending dislocated wrist in the opener.

What he has accomplished in the past six games is pretty amazing. During that time, he has forced 4 fumbles, twice as many as he did in his previous 93 games (62 starts) in the NFL. Three of the forced fumbles have been Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, including the one Monday night that set up the winning touchdown in overtime.

In the past six games he has broken up 5 passes; he had 10 in the previous six seasons. He also has an interception, doubling his career total, and he recovered the fourth fumble of his career during his current hot streak.

Tampa and U of I have nothing to do with the Bears.

Lovie was 81-63 as Bears headcoach. 5 winning seasons, 3 losing seasons (including his first year in which he took over a terribl Jauron team), One 8-8 season.

He didn't win a Super Bowl, and it was probably time for both parties to move on, but to say Lovie was not a winning coach or not a good coach is inaccurate.

the year Lovie had a QB playing well, Cutler got injured and a 7-3 team with an outstanding defense finished 8-8. in the NFC championship game the year before...QB gets hurt again....then they go 10-6 the next season and fire him. within two years, a free-fall. (i realize the players were aging....)

The problem with 312 and many others' arguments is that they're completely inconsistent regarding coaches. If 312 liked Lovie, he'd say he was a great coach who won a lot with no offense.

But he doesn't like him, so he was a bad coach who was carried by a great defense.
