Happened to my COO after a bad break when he stumbled on a hill and was holding on to his infant daughter. The bone snapped through some of the arteries. They managed to save the leg but it was not easy and he has a titanium rod in one of his leg bones.

Hopefully they save the leg and glad that he made his money. This probably ends his career.

That replay of what happened to him wasn't for the squeamish. Hope he's ok.

Satan: Snap his leg in half and fuck him out of a touchdown on the same play.

Bears tweeted out that he had successful surgery. Good news.

Talk about an injury plagued career. Glad he didn't lose the leg. He certainly got all he could out of his talent. Hope he gets a good pension!

Has any player in the last 20 years ever actually had to lose the leg when having one of these "injury so severe we have to operate to try to save the leg" surgeries? I've heard this several times in the last few seasons, and all the players seem to recover.

I have a feeling that the reports are a little bit sensationalized. Without the surgery I'm sure they would eventually have to amputate but I'm guessing that getting it done quickly makes it very unlikely it will cause an amputation.

There will be questions if he can, or should, ever play again though.

There was damage to the artery in his leg. If they cannot repair the damage to the artery, obviously blood flow to certain parts of the leg is non-existent. No blood flow means that tissue and muscle die, and when that happens amputation is the only viable option to stave off possible infection or death.

The same speculation occurred when Sean Livingston destroyed his knee while finishing a layup. I'm not a medical professional, but based on what I've read I think the common denominator between the amputation speculation and these injuries is when arteries or other blood flow issues are involved. It's disturbing as hell to think routine landings could result with your leg being amputated. Both Livingston and Miller just landed awkwardly after jumping - it's not as if some 300lb dude rammed into their knees to cause these injuries.

EDIT: Damn you, bagel boy.

Yeah, that is the issue. With Livingston and Teddy Bridgewater, the major arteries were not damaged. Its appears that Miller's were, which was the cause for concern.

My source on this is a friend I've known for 30 years who is an ER doctor.

I heard all this talk when Bridgewater was hurt about how the medical staff saved his leg with their quick and appropriate action. When Miller got hurt yesterday I thought he broke his leg or dislocated his knee immediately based on that horrific movement. What the hell was the bears medical staff doing walking him off the field and evaluating him on the sideline? I couldnt understand why they weren't throwing him in the immobilizer and driving him off the field immediately from the endzone. All that extra movement to the knee could have further damaged that artery.

Hold on. I'm not disputing the severity of the injury nor the repercussions if it goes untreated.

I'm asking if, with surgery, there is a 100% prevention of loss of limb with the operation performed. Rick's response confirms he shares my opinion, I believe.

In my non-medical opinion, it wouldn't be 100%. There could be complications or the damage could be too severe. However, I would guess that with modern medicine those risks are low.

The Bears report was that Miller had a tear in his artery. That can only be surgically repaired. Yes, him losing his leg was a real possibility.

This is very sad. He was one of the best reception TEs the Bears ever had.

Are they saying the turf caused the injury? I'd like to think it wouldn't have happened on the grass.

Cool thing from the Bears here;
Quote:
Whether Zach Miller ever plays again, or not, he’ll be a member of the Bears in 2018.

The tight end, who suffered a likely career-ending left leg injury in October, signed a one-year contract with the Bears, the team announced Monday morning.

He’ll receive a split contract, a source confirmed — if he makes the team, he’ll receive $790,000. If he doesn’t, he’ll earn $458,000. Pro Football Talk first reported the terms.

Whether Miller plays again remains an open question. He stopped needing his crutches only in late March. But the Bears have made a classy statement about their loyalty to Miller, who was one of the team’s most beloved teammates even before his horrifying injury. With the contract, Miller can spend time with his teammates and use the Bears’ training facilities.

Yea to take a TD away from a guy on a play that ended his career, when it was a TD anyways, was one of those moments that makes you hate the NFL.

He only got off crutches a few months ago? I hope he doesn't make the team. For his sake.

He has a little extra motivation. I think that is a good thing. Bears get a marketing W. Everyone wins.
