Whenever things don't go as Bernsie insists they will he always invokes things that can't be explained like "shadow business", "backchannel discussions", and undefined "legal reasons" to explain why.

I always love this too because he's forced into sounding exactly like "Steak dinner boom" guy.

George has to find someone to hire a capable football operations guy and him and Ted need to not be seen or heard.

McCaskey now also confirming Phillips is involved in football decisions.

People have been saying this for years though. At some point you gotta figure.the family just doesn't want a football ops guy. They want Ted running things and a figurehead at best as nominal GM.

Yea, I know. It's not gonna happen. And the wheels on the bus go round and round.

#Bears president Ted Phillips said he and chairman George McCaskey will accompany GM Ryan Pace on interview trips. They all used the workd "collaborative" while making it clear Pace has final say.

And Dan was ardent about Pace being the only one at the conference and using the word "I" instead of "we"; Dan's narrative about Ted has finally been destroyed once and for all.

How can Dan actually be surprised about how this went down? It's not like this is Patriots we are dealing with here.

Dan sounds really flustered about George and Ted being involved today.

Ted Phillips is GM, Ryan Pace is lead scout.

When you think of their roles that way, which btw is the correct way, everything makes sense. The baffling way the Bears seem to do business isn't really that perplexing. They just have an extremely secretive and abnormal decision making process when it comes to personnel. The usual titles are meaningless when it comes to the Bears, with a series of stooges assuming "important" roles serve only as fodder to a pitchfork wielding fanbase when the (inevitable) failure comes. But the real culprits, the true incompetents, stay insulated in vague positions with little media exposure or prestige. In this way the Bears are very similar to a Reinsdorf team.

I come away feeling pretty good about Pace's football acumen because he does seem to be better than most at finding good players. When you admit that Pace has basically no input on big picture moves or the general direction of the club it strips away a lot of his supposed failures. Another team will be smart enough to hire him after Ted throws him in front of the bus and he'll do well when he's holding the keys.

Pace sucks and they know it. They don't trust him. He's treated like a new graduate who is learning on the job.

Someone mentioned it on the Score today that Fox's record was horrible and he made some bad on-field calls, but he did restore order to the locker room, which was in shambles due to the inept leadership of Trestman. So if there is any positive aspect to Fox's tenure here, that would be it.

Then they should have moved Ted over to the business side, ala Crane Kenney, and brought in a veteran football executive (like the Hawks did with Scotty Bowman) to assist Pace and mentor him along the way. I do not want Ted Phillips having any say over the football operations; let him handle marketing and stadium-related issues. Coaches, players, and hell even Michael McCaskey have come and gone, and the only person still there is Ted. That is their problem.

Boy they sure used get a lot of dumb callers saying Phillips still ran the team , was involved in the day to day , didnt they?

I think that the laughing stocks are those who didn't believe Ted and the McCaskey's will have the final say until 1. They die B They sell

This kind of crap is why I stopped being a fan 30yrs ago.

It's simply a bad family business that needed Pat Ryan to have been sold a larger share long ago.

So, after I move to Columbus next month, which Ohio NFL team would be less embarrassing to be a fan of than the Bears?

Yes...they show no respect for the fans (despite their lip service) and in three years we'll likely be in the exact same position we are today -- listening to Ted talk about the next coaching and/or GM search. They do not deserve our money or attention.

I'm also disgusted by the utterly spineless media members that refused to ask even a single tough question.

What was Bernstein saying - that his sources say only Pace would have been speaking today?

Yes, he's saying he believes in the rebuild and the job that Pace is doing. Doesn't he have to say these things?

Not upset at all just mocking the Bears for being the Bears and Dan for being surprised how weird the press conference was.

When you let Jeffrey walk way, get nothing from your 1st round pick (White), lose your top WR (Meredith) and sign cast off WR's as your key contributors, would you expect them to be much worst than bottom of the league? Clearly, a fail by Pace here to not have more talent on the roster.
