If he has a breakout year, do they extend him before going into next season? Or do they play hardball with him and tag him after the second season? I remember seeing something like 7 of 8 playoff teams last year had QBs on rookie contracts. Not saying that the Bears will be limited, but paying all that money to Fields means they can't throw a lot of money at holes and problems over the next year or two, and I'm sure the defense is 1-2 years away from being top 10. If you gamble, maybe you can sign some FA's next year and try to get your one shot at a Super Bowl in 2024 or 2025.

Needs at least a few 300 yard passing games to get an extension.

I think 3000 passing yard would be viewed as a breakout year for him.

He'll have at least 3K at the bye week.

No pictures please.

I'm still torn because I really want the guy to succeed, but it really seems like the guy either can't read defenses or he doesn't trust tight throws. My biggest worry is he will try to focus on passing from the pocket and throw a ton of interceptions.

Unless you are paying him 85% of Mahomes contract there is no point in paying early. If you sign a team friendly deal and he goes off you will immediately be reworking the deal.

Might as well hold tight and pay max money if he is indeed the one.

If he has a good year, you invoke his fifth year option and wait for him to progress even more in his 4th year before starting to talk about the future

I think we'll have a pretty good idea this season if he's going to get an extension. He either shows passing accuracy or he's more of the same. For as athletic and talented he is as a runner, no passing success means they draft a QB in 2024.

the worry is we said we will know a lot more about him last year. all we know is the same as the first year. its not his arm or accuracy, it's his brain. can he see and decide where to throw to fast enough in the pocket.

whats promising is for the lack of passing, he certainly made up for it with his feet. if you directly compare him to mahomes last season, hes close to mahomes on points per 100 snaps. and that's with 2 less games. he's clearly an elite runner, and i agree with others here that last season was nowhere near as bad as the record. and for all those losses, nobody thought fields was a glaring problem.

for a bears franchise, if fields is only a stable and above average quarterback, that is fucking gold. its up to the organization to put a team around him. other teams have done that with average quarterbacks and won titles.

Fields may not realize how big this season is for him, but he will start feeling the heat if he flops on opening day.

Poles has a few years of job security, but there is an urgency to make a call on Fields given the amount of draft capital they will have next year.
