Extrapolating that, what could you get for Fields? A 2nd and a 5th?
Would you take Harrison Jr. and Penix (or Nix) in round 1, then take the best center and edge rusher with your 2nds?
That might buy them time. I don't think Bears fans would hate that.

I don’t like Penix given age and injury history. I don’t like Nix because I think he’ll suck.

If they go QB, it’s got to be with the Panthers pick.

I'm starting to lean towards taking Harrison first. Maybe trade down to 2 or 3 if you get the first pick.. I like Maye, but believe Harrison is the only sure thing at the top of this draft.

trade with the cards for both of their #1. Take Harrison with Cards first pick, Bowers with the Bears pick and JJ Mc Carthy with the cards second pick

If you don't like Fields because of his inability to throw a forward pass, then you are going to hate JJ McCarthy

JJ McCarthy sucks. He’s worth a flier in the 7th round if you need a guy for a scout team run-heavy offense.

Workshopping a theory here so help me out…

I’ve always had a few thoughts about Fields that seemed unrelated:

1) He looks like a muppet with eyes on the side of his head
2) He has insane vision when running - elite even
3) He’s completely incompetent when the rush comes from his right

After watching him run directly into Kmet blocking a guy, I’m convinced the guy has the vision of a hammerhead shark. Peripheral is probably 100th percentile but he can’t see something directly in front of his face.

I've been laughing at this all day.

The Harbaugh offense.

or someone else from the second tier

Unlike others, the Penix injuries don't scare me much but you have to understand that he is a traditional big armed, pocket qb.

He looked pretty rough in the rain during the Apple Cup. Can’t handle Bear weather.

I don’t think arm with Penix.

Penix is growing on me (boing oing oing). He is accurate, decisive, and can fit it in tight windows (giggity).
12-0 this year. Beat Penn State at Indiana. Threw for 352 yds. and put up 38 pts. to beat Michigan WITH INDIANA RECEIVERS.
You might be able to roll with him, Bagent, Harrison Jr., Moore and upgraded lines.

I don't know if he is going to be great, but he made Indiana a dangerous football team, which is a herculean task

I think his time at Indiana is a little over praised because of the injuries and a couple wins against prestige programs.

…and the fact that the B1G is almost entirely dogshit save for a couple teams each year.

He's got 63 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in Washington. Caleb Williams is at 72 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and he's a generational talent.

The injuries are the big concern for sure but it really shouldn't be an argument that is a highly skilled quarterback.

You’re leaving out Williams’ Oklahoma year, but you’re otherwise correct that Williams is younger, had better numbers and is considered the better talent of the two.

He put up big numbers and defeated the non-dogshit teams. AT INDIANA.
He might be a terrible, oft-injured NFL quarterback. Who knows. But if they pivot from Fields, he has a decent college pedigree.

I left it out because I'm comparing them for the last 2 years.

I would rather have Williams over Penix but the point is that Penix is also putting up impressive numbers.

I don’t think I’ve suggested he’s a bad college football player. I just don’t want the Bears to make him the future of their franchise.

how will Bernstein frame the narrative when they move from an athletic, mobile african american qb to a grindy, pocket african american qb?
