Should have just brought them both to camp and waited for someone to get hurt.

They really got a 1st because of the forfeited pick.

Florio wrote about those social media posts from teams when they get rid of a player and I loved his take. He was talking about Keenan Allen, but it applies to everyone in the NFL.

Quote:
Thank you, now scram. That’s not a knock on the Chargers. Every team does it. The act of terminating a player’s employment has morphed in recent years into a bizarre social-media celebration.

...there are no sacred cows.

Except for quarterback Justin Herbert. Who will hold that status for as long as he plays well enough to justify his pay. The moment he sufficiently dips, he’ll be yanked out of the machine, traded or cut, and thanked with effusive, heartfelt posts on X, Instagram, or whatever toxic digital fast-food wasteland is poisoning our minds at the time.

Jeez, social-media kick Florio's dog or steal his woman? Why so aggro about a voluntary participation medium. No one's forced to twitter, afaik. As long as you regard twitter as entertainment more than an information source and IG as a dating site they're fine.

Seems like more a Florio problem than a social media problem if he can't go on there without it poisoning his mind. Sorry to hear Florio dude's mentally suss. I like his NFL coverage. TMZ for the NFL.

Especially on any commentary within this division, such a Vikings homer.

yeah, that's fun, it's like the old Drudge Report tag-line News and Rumors.

Otherwise if we only stuck to official NFL home office and team press releases, it'd be dulll, drab coverage. So Florio throws 10 rumors up on his blog and maybe 1 out of 10 turn out to be valid. Probably he gets a lot of his info from agents trying to position their guys for contracts and such. I dunno if there's anyone in pro sports media more pro agent than Florio. He could also just make shit up---Unnamed Sources--and no one would know.

Lions fans 2024 can look down on Vikings fans with a bit of schadenfreude-ish sympathy.

Vikings are out of contention now for who knows how long. Worst thing might be mortgaging the farm trading away a grip of draft picks to move up for a QB this draft. Take the L on the next season or two, accumulate young players via the draft and try for extra 1st round lottery ticket(s) for 2026 QB draft: trade Justin Jefferson and maybe even trade whatever player comes back in the Jefferson trade++, until you're sitting with 3+ 1st round picks for 2026.

And the Lions have never lost a Super Bowl. Not even once.

Wrong about what, though? He mostly just gives commentary and his thoughts/opinion on the NFL.

Another Florio thought I agree with. Could be wrong? Who knows?

Quote:
The Steelers have completely overhauled their quarterback depth chart. Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky are gone. Russell Wilson has arrived. Now, Justin Fields will join him.

They got both at bargain-basement rates. Wilson for the league minimum, since the Broncos owe him the rest of his $39 million salary for 2024. Fields for little more than $3.2 million, in the final year of his slotted rookie deal.

Will they compete for the starting job? Perhaps. If, in the end, Wilson is the starter, it’s tempting to wonder whether they’ll use both of them.

Rewind to 1995. Kordell Stewart was a rookie. Neil O’Donnell was the starter. Stewart made cameo appearances in a hybrid role, earning the nickname “Slash.” It was good enough to get the Steelers to the Super Bowl.

So will Fields now be Slash 2.0?

It would be a great way to maximize Pittsburgh’s return on a minimal investment. And it could give opposing defenses fits.

Ultimately, it’s not about putting the best quarterback on the field. It’s about using the best 11 offensive players. Fields will be one of them, even if he’s QB2. Why not use him?

New offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is surely already thinking about the possibilities of creating mismatches with both Wilson and Fields, who has been one of the most dangerous running quarterbacks of the past two NFL seasons.

However it plays out, this is what “all-in” looks like. The Steelers have many strengths. They also had a glaring weakness. And they’ve addressed it. Not by forking over $100 million guaranteed for a pocket passer with a torn Achilles tendon but with a total 2024 investment of less than $4.5 million for two guys who will be better than what they had.

Watch out, AFC North. Watch out, rest of the conference.

Oh, mama, I’m in fear for my life.

If Wilson still has the skills that made him so attractive to the Broncos two years ago and if Fields can play like he has in 2022 and 2023, every team Pittsburgh faces will need to be almost as concerned about the offense as they’ve typically been about the defense.

Florio ever explain how a kid from Steeler and maybe Bengal country ended up a fan of the far North Norsemen? I know a lot of people in that age group ended up Cowboy (Cousin Sal and his crew from New York, Lebron James) or Steeler fans; but who picks Vikings when you're not from North Dakota or Minnesota/NW Wisco /Western UP etc.

Esp back when if you didn't live in the coverage area for broadcast TV and the team wasn't the Cowboys or Steelers or Niners or whatever team was good that year, you were never seeing your team play.

Forgot about Smith going back to OCing. That'll be fun with Fields and the corpse of Russell Wilson Athletic Gear. Smith turned Ryan Tannehill into a serviceable starting QB and made Derrick Henry the GOAT:
