After watching the Pack win tonight, I asked my buddies who are Bears fans, "why can't the Bears do this?"

Is it poor drafting? A bad defensive scheme? Not spending enough money on top-tier players? Poor coaches? What is the glaring issue that keeps the Bears from hoisting the Lombardi trophy?

I don't know if the Bears could have beaten the Steelers tonight, but hopefully they can challenge the Pack for the NFC North division in the future.

How? By spending too much money? They're cursed?

I consider the Steelers & Patriots as the 2 best football organizations in the NFL. The Bears organization isn't even in the team photo with the top organizations & ranks near the bottom. Until the McClaskeys replace Phillips with a football guy, Angelo with a real GM who can evaluate talent & draft, & Lovie with a coach who doesn't make mistakes that most High School coaches don't make, nothing will change. The NFL sucked this year so the Bears over-achieved, which means we're stuck with these 3 turds for another 3 or 4 years. For the love of God, how long can this shit show continue? Jauron...Wannstedt...Lovie...Angelo...Phillips.
It would be hard to have a worse track record of hiring second rate people.
Every success or failure of a business or organization is a direct result of ownership & upper management.
Like the old saying goes, the fish stinks from the head.

1. Imperative to win. Why should they when they have a large fanbase? You win the super bowl, you have to extend contracts stupidly and overpay people who might not ever bring you to the dance again.

2. God, I'm almost tempted to stop there. But okay, your defensive line's getting old. Your offensive line is crap. I won't make the claim that the receiver corps is even average. And into this, you bring in Jay Cutler, so he can be emasculated. Wunnerful. And so, when do you intend to get the other pieces in place? Must be "never," because that's the pace they're going at.

3. Coaching, General Managing, etc. The McCaskeys hire people they're comfortable with. I don't think they were too happy with Ditka, along those lines. So that means, Dick Jauron and Lovie. Wannsteadt didn't work out, but that looked like a shocking innovative move that just didn't work out.

You're going to keep Ted because he got the stadium. You're going to keep Angelo for as long as he stays (and in turn get the kind of team he can assemble.) And of course, a Lovie-like coach

As to this year, the line that was doing the total protection package for Cutler couldn't manage that with Green Bay. Peppers was negated. Despite the fact that GBs offense was sluggish that game, the Bears couldn't capitalize. And then, shit, Hanie. And the question becomes, was GB hanging back to let the guy hang himself, or did he actually show some poise/grit?

Even so, and none the less, assuming Hanie pulled a Frank Reich, the Bears were sluggish. They wouldn't show up for the Superbowl; would be just as flat as Rex's team was.

I think if you pare it down enough this solely lies with Jerry Angelo. I think the coaching staff has performed as well as they could have with the TALENT, or lack thereof, they have been given. Green Bay has drafted well and has a lot of "home grown" talent that was on display this Sunday. The Bears do not have home grown talent because Angelo does not draft well.
I keep hearing, "the Bears #1's could not start for Green Bay". That is a real slap in the face for Jerry Angelo and the rest of the front office. I think change needs to be made at this level, and with that change I think the Bears can become a great team.
They will need to spend again this off-season and get OL help along with one or two #1 receivers, or at least a #1 and actual #2. They also need to draft the heir apparent to Urlacher soon.

well it is very easy to answer this .. ownership bears will not win shit until virginia dies, and family sells team... angelo is a loser who can't evaluate talent in players or coaches... angelo n smith never should have been hired ... peppers covered up alot of problems with that defense. this team is old and has peaked, watch lovie and angelo stay around 3 or 4 more years n won't win shit... i had packers and ravens preseason to meet in super bowl, packers are only getting better bears won't make playoffs next 2 seasons.

The answer is very simple. Being in the same division as the World Champion Green Bay Packers.

During the superbowl my 17 year old son (born in 1993) as the same question as the thread title. He and the other attendees that night were shocked when I told him that in his lifetime the packers have had only 2 starting QBs (yes I forgot about Flynn's start) while the bears have had over 20.

The Cheapo Halas/McCaskey's hold them back. Always been that way. When the old man died and they got football people to run the place, they won a SB.

The cheapness trickles down all the way to the GM/COACH/Player level.

I'm sorry, but the Bears have been awarding huge contracts for awhile now. As far as scouting,I think I read somewhere they are always understaffed.

Just so you know how you were clearly wrong in saying that the Bears didn't win because they were in the same division.

Fine...Conference.

I was talking about the future anyways, as in what "holds them back, not what has "held" them back.

Well hopefully the Packers can get luckier than the 10 wins they got this season and maybe they can win a division title rather than back into the playoffs next year
