Emery was a real problem.

And yet Trestman would probably be better a better offensive mind to develop (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky than anyone on the Bears staff. He actually had a respectable NFL resume prior to the CFL. I seem to recall many saying the Bears' mistake wan't hiring Trestman, but making him head coach.

Initially the mistake was hiring him as a head coach. We quickly learned that once the league figured out his offense he couldn't adjust. We would have had to hope the Bears win the SB in his first year as an OC

So......was the Fox hiring Pace's call? Differing stories regarding this.

Ernie Accorsi and Ted Phillips hired Fox. Pace had nothing to do with it.

Did I hear right when I thought I heard Spiegs say that aside from Patton Oswalt, no other offensive coach on the team has ever called plays in a game? Further, I thought I heard him add a tag of 'at any level' (which seems unlikely but who knows with this outfit).

True? False? Other?

If there is one thing that Pace has done that gives you serious concern its the kicker position. That has been a disaster for years and its ridiculous that it hasn't been fixed.

He had a few bad games, made almost $4mm a year and was the team's NFLPA team representative. For this team perrenially with plenty of cap space, I really wonder what got him launched

Or that he wasted his first 2 years with Cutler?

They were set to hire Bruce Arians but did something to piss him off (that I am forgetting now). Imagine how different the organization would be with that one decision.

Arians has squeezed life out of Carson Palmer. I bet he would have been a big positive on Cutler.

Didn't they make him do a mock post game press conference.....after he had just done most of a season worth of REAL post game press conferences?

Yeah, how fucked up is that? The same regime that gave us the Dave McGinnis fiasco (except swap out Michael McCaskey for George). What a laughingstock.

Or depleting the roster of all skill position players? Refusing to admit his 1st round pick in 2015 is a buster and continuously relying on him as a #1-#2 receiver going into the season? Horrific FA signings outside of Hicks? Failure to build depth on the roster?

The mistake was seeing Trestman as a Point-B-to-Point-C coach following Lovie but then still doing a half-hearted retool. If they really felt they had to get Trestman into the building (to get his football information), they should have hired him as Lovie Offensive Coordinator #8 or whatever and let Lovie coach the 2013 season with one last run with his core. If that failed (it almost certainly would have, I seem to recall that entire season being a coronation for the Seahawks, America's Black Conscience), okay, Lovie's gone after ten years, Cutler is gone too, and you start all over again. But I guess they wanted to be "competitive within the division" and now here we are.

I doubt that was his decision. Phillips decided when Cutler could be jettisoned. Pace probably had input towards the replacement, though.

But kicker is so far below Phillips' radar that you can't shift the blame there. The Kevin White pick, staunch refusal to sign a good FA this past offseason, Cutler marriage and Fox hire can all pretty safley be attributed to Phillips' meddling. But not the kicker...and perhaps the disaster that has befallen one of the easiest positions to fill gives us a window into Pace's inability to do his job.

I think Trestman had received offensive coordinator offers in the past but said he'd only leave the CFL for a head coaching position. And obviously even if there was an OC spot that would ever compel him to leave, I seriously doubt it was the one in Chicago.

I still like one of the less appreciated Bears gonna Bear story of that debacle was how Phillips and Emery narrowed their field of candidates and lost Arians because they wanted to force the next head coach to retain Marinelli and other Lovie guys, yet not one of those key assistant coaches had any interest in being retained by Trestman anyway.

Robbie forgot that NFL kickers should be seen, and rarely if ever heard from.

That and he cost the Bears a play off spot when he shanked that kick at MN in Trestman's first year.

I never understood that. All WRs are Caller Bobs. Look no further than the Bellamy/McBride shit this year. You should be able to put up with a shithead if hes a top WR.

Trestman's defense gave up 50 points, had a bye, then gave up another 50 points. They also let the Packers convert on 4th down twice on their final drive before Chris Conte blew his coverage on the game winning TD pass against the Packers (which was also a 4th down).

It is absolutely foolish to blame the Bears missing the playoffs on a second down missed FG attempt.

Who died and named you John McLaughlin?

If Gould makes the field goal, do the Bears make the play offs?

I honestly don't know how that would have shaken out.

If the Bears had prevented the Packers from converting on 4th down just one time on that final drive, they would have won the game and made the playoffs.

If Gould makes the field goal, the game against the packers isn't even relevant.

And for Dignified rube...OB is a blow hard. Always has been, always will be.

I don't know. They still might have had to beat the Packers. Regardless, kicking a long FG on 2nd down is not Gould's fault. And there were MANY other problems that caused the Bears to miss the playoffs.

But eight wins seems like a pipedream for the 2018 Bears.
