Are you serious? That's awesome.

I have an original photo of the Pope from his trip to Chicago in 1979 that was passed on to me by my grandmother, who was Polish. It's of him in his limousine waving to the crowd with his sombrero hat on.

It's ironic how bad the world has gotten since the good Pope left us.

Interesting fact about Karol Wojtiwa: It's been written about him that he had the ability to see actual spirits. I don't doubt it.

I shook JP2 hand at a session at the Vatican.

I had a bit of a conversation with Lech Walesa. It's surprising he would have been looked to as a leader of anything but back in those days it took more balls than brains to stand up to the Russians.

Finishing off the holy trinity of Polonia, I had dinner with Mike Krzyzewski and then hung out in the locker room the next morning as he broke down the tape for the next game against BC. He was shirtless the entire time. Chris Collins and Johnny Dawkins walked in later to say hi. The one thing that most sticks out to me is how much he hated Lucas Johnson from the Illini. We weren't even talking Illinois basketball and he was ranting about him.

I was in a strategy session with Emmanuel and one other person. I can't believe I had the balls to actually give him long winded advice. I was so young and dumb. To his credit, he did appear to listen although I'm sure he was internally cursing me.

I had a small group discussion with Al Gore when he was running for president. I actually cracked a joke. I liked him. He wasn't the stiff he is portrayed to be.

Was warned about but still got into a cussing match with Emanuel within 20 minutes of meeting him.

Who won? Word has is he's pretty competitive in that arena.

It was a draw. Now Gov. Pritzker sat in his kitchen laughing at the spectacle.

Btw, Ed Vrydolyak was a really funny guy.

Another interesting story about him.

His last official act as Cardinal in Poland before he was elected Pope was to help a woman who stopped his car on the way to the airport, find her lost cat.

Seemed like a nice guy.

Interesting picture of all the popular, good-looking gals in my Senior class smiling and holding up a BUSH sign in our yearbook.

How was meeting Randy Travis? I always thought he seemed like the squarest guy ever, like a random guy in the church choir. He apparently was anything but that in his younger years and the footage of him escaping from the police car and running down the road totally naked confirms it.

We met him at Taste of Chicago probably 20 years ago. We were sitting in the shade away from the action toward LSD and a Limo pulled up about 100 feet in front of us. Randy and his 1st wife popped out and rode a golf cart right in front of us heading to some cake cutting ceremony. My friend yelled out to him something about Matlock and Randy smiled and waved. Later they passed us again and we walked over and asked if we could take a picture - to which he obliged with his arms around our wives. He seemed like a good guy, kind of on the small side but he was buff.

off the top of my head...

John Candy: at the gas station on the corner of Deerfield and Sanders when he was filming Uncle Buck. We talked hockey for 20 minutes. Great guy.

Blues Traveler: Smoked a joint with them on the corner of Diversey and Sheffield after the Bulls beat Seattle for champ #6. They pulled over in a limo and got out to use the pay phone and were trying to find Rodman's party.

Robert Cray & Gale Sayers: during my 15 minutes of fame I got to go backstage at the Metro after Robert Cray's concert. i was a massive fan so this was a big deal. Sayers was a massive fan too apparently and the 3 of us were basically alone in a room. I pretty much just listened.

Bass player from Stained: met him at Frank's on Clark Street very late. He asked me and my buddy if we wanted to take X with him and without even waiting for an answer threw two X pills into our beers. We looked at each other for half a second and then downed the beers. Crazy night

Uncle Buck was filmed at a home on the block where I grew up in evanston. My parents got all kinds of swag in exchange for the inconvenience of street closings, etc.
