Yesterday morning at a get together for the retirement of a mutual friend.

MS is starting to take its toll on him. He wasn't moving very well unfortunately.

I'd plan my days so I could listen to him as much as I could.

There was a moment where he was as good of radio as I have ever heard, and I include Stern in that list.

I know I'm an old coot who refers back to this too much but chicago once had the greatest talk lineup in the history of radio with Brandmeier, Stern, Dahl and Matthews. You could hear great stuff from 5 am until 10 pm.

There was a time on 'CKG where it was Stern, Matthews, Dahl. That was good the good 'ole times.

Stern couldn't work on Dahl's station. Dahl had spent a decade telling his listeners (like me) that Stern sucked and just ripped him off.

It wasn't until I'd moved on quite a bit from the old Loop in the 2000s and started to listen to Stern on satellite that I appreciated the show more.

But, Stern was never going to win over Dahl fans in the 90s.

I kind of remember it a bit differently on Sterns first go-round. Yes it’s true that Dahl believed that Stern got his act from Dahl (back in the Detroit days), but Dahl actually reached out to Howard when he joined the station and Stern was a bit aloof. IIRC, Stern openly bashed the Chicago hosts (including Johnny B) when he entered the market - which was the real source of bad blood amongst the regular listeners.

This is exactly right. Stern alienated the Chicago market on his first go-round. He was much more well-received the second.

I hope the best for the guy, but I never got his allure. Same goes for Brandmeier.

At least with Dahl, got it, I just thought he was an unfunny prick

Dahl and Stern fan here.

You cannot listen to both back then and not realize it was Stern stealing entire bits from Dahl without even attempting to repackage them. The most blatant was Stern calling The Bijou Theater. I always thought Dahl was full of it talking about Stern stealing but I was floored when I heard that from Stern the first time. No way a NY DJ knows about the answering machine of a gay porno theater in Chicago unless he heard it somewhere. No way. There were many other examples. I still loved Stern but the truth is some of his most beloved work, stuff he replayed in best of shows, is Dahl's work.

Was he Chet Chit Chat too? Years later I would learn who Chet Coppock was.

I guess Chet Chit Chat was Bruce Wolf, so I think my first sports radio memory is hearing Bruce Wolf do a parody of a guy I didn't know existed. At least I assume that was my first memory. I very well could have heard it much later on and I just assume that I heard it in the 90s.

The only memory I'm sure I have of the 90s is listening to Mancow yelling at striking UPS workers on the radio which I'm sure was as hilarious as it sounds.

It was a parody of Swirsky

Well, I didn't know who he was either so that works out.

I always thought of it as a combination leaning more toward Swirsky.

Stern wipes the floor with Steve Dull. Who cares who came first (lol)? Chicago will always be second fiddle to NYC. Deal with it.

Yes. The staccato style was swirsk but the content was a parody of something on sportsphone.

The voice was like Swirsky, the content was more like Chet.

He’s still doing that? Yeesh.

He was doing those talks at churches 2-3 years ago. My mom saw him speak at her church in Joliet and got two copies of his book (more like a pamphlet) for my brother and I, but I didn’t read it.

Loved Kev back in the day, and hope he’s hanging in there health-wise, but my interest in his religious awakening remains at zero.

Really? I never liked him. I hated all the stupid voices that Dahl called "puppets." I thought Jim Shorts was insipid. And Garry did a great and hilarious impression of Eddie Schwartz- Garry was local and completely understood the character- and Kevin took it and turned it into the idiotic Ed Zeppelin. The more I think about it, the more I hated the guy.

I thought Jim Shorts was hysterical. Jim Shorts having his own puppet named Cecil is brilliant comedy
