250 of them lined up for WOW Air. Probably a lot of connections, but it can't be all of them. Enjoy your 4 hours of sunlight!

I dunno, to me it sounds like it would be fun.

The days are short, but the light is beautiful

Although in the Arctic Circle, winter in Iceland doesn’t mean complete days of darkness. In Reykjavik during the winter solstice in December, the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at 11:20am and sets around 3:30pm. In the more Northern parts of the country this can be a bit more extreme.

Although strange to most of us, there is one benefit to these short hours of light—the whole day is beautiful. Since the sun never reaches a high position in the sky, the light during these hours creates a warm glow covering the country. The sunrises and sunsets last for a couple of hours at a time and light is also soft, making it perfect for photography.

While it is definitely difficult to get out of bed at 8am (or even 9 or 10) when it’s still completely dark outside, the city is well lit and most Icelanders have already been up and about for a while. Normal life goes on as usual before the sun rises, and also after the sun sets. Don’t assume that just because it’s dark there will be nothing to do.

It’s not insanely cold

Forget everything you think when you hear the word “Iceland.” Summer on this Arctic island is actually characterized by expansive views of green landscape, waterfalls and hot springs. While snow may blanket almost every inch of the country during winter, it isn’t any colder than other popular winter destinations around the world.

Due to a position right in line with the Gulf Stream, Iceland stays relatively temperate regardless of its latitude. In fact, New York City gets colder than Iceland during these months. Wear layers and prepare for temperatures hovering around 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) or only a few colder, and you’ll be fine.

Then you'll be plunged into 20 hours of not so beautiful darkness. I applaud Iceland's tourism board though, it's hard to find a way to sell that.

Well then she's trying to justify her winter trip to the arctic. I guesss if you just wanna go somewhere it can't be very expensive.

Currently, the land they called Greenland has 210 minutes of daylight, and it's absolutely shitty outside pretty much year round.

Iceland is sunny all week with an hour more of daylight.

Tromso, Norway, is currently experiencing the polar night. looks awesome in pictures. nothing but drinking and festivals...and vampires.

Come to think of it many of the people boarding that flight did speak some gobbly nut language nobody can possibly understand. I figure they are Icelandic. Which makes sense.

By the way for those of you interested in this flight-

Think an international Spirit (though a lot better than Ryanair). If you can travel with a Spirit-sized personal item for a few days, you'll be fine. The ORD-REK flight has extremely limited catering on board - best to bring Subway and buy a water bottle at ORD.

For many years, I had a client in Sweden who worked as an engineer. He told the story of having to go inspect the northern-most bridge in the entire country in the winter, because they were worried about the effects of the ice. I believe this was the bridge: https://goo.gl/maps/CDbE5tF5gBw

They had to inspect the bridge on a Tuesday. It took them 48 hours because the airport didn't have lights so there was only one flight a day in winter that landed and took back off again around 11am. It was also cold as fuck, and dark for something like 22 hours a day at that time of the year. (It's dark 24/7 starting this Sunday for a few weeks.)

He said the hangover from two nights of drinking lasted into the weekend.

It's a matter of daylight hours more than anything. Vacationing in total darkness can't be much fun, especially in a country that is completely known for outdoors stuff.

I was flying to London. Same gate three hours later than WOW.
