I've spent a bit of time in Texas.

I enjoyed my time.

Yea, we lived in Arlington, TX in 1987 and 1988 and loved it. No state income tax, low cost of living, low real estate taxes, and very friendly people.

Federal aide, in this case, doesn't mean what your think it means.

You are probably right ... I just assume the south when I think of sucking off the federal nipple .. I know all these loud mouth Texans screamed about hurricane Katrina federal $ .. N they all beg for it now for floods or tornadoes-droughts.. I never looked up the stats its just hypocritical..

The bedrock is like 6 feet deep in most parts of Texas ...droughts and floods are guaranteed to create massive havoc and fairly routinely... I know they get A lot of Fed Aid and could never secede n survive...Hawaii and Alaska are the only States that could...maybe the Dakotas.

Federal Aid for floods and fires is microscopic compared to federal dollars via defense spending, 312. The Dakota's are also land locked so no go for them.

I am not sure about all federal aid as it is such a morass with its tentacles everywhere. One story I do recall recently though was federal medical money. Texas refused a shit load of federal money with that because they refused to be forced to do Obamacare and Medicaid things the feds were shoving down everyone's throat. So that may not be smart but they stood by their talk.
