The explanation I heard is that they were trying to take something that had been a negative association and turn it into a positive. Instead of referring to the Cubs when players ran into each other or otherwise fucked up, when someone made a good play in training, practice, or whatever they say "That's Cub."

I understand their point, but I can also see how other people would find it annoying.
