No closer than Bernie did on the Democratic side. Trump destroyed the field.

That's still different. We're talking about evangelicals throwing their seemingly prototypical candidate to the side in order to select Trump. That didn't happen though because Cruz beat Rubio, Bush, Kasich, etc., which demonstrates that a ton of people, and presumably a ton of evangelicals, voted for the evangelical candidate. Sanders isn't an apt comparison because the Dems we're locked in a two person race from the beginning almost. Cruz had to knock off several legitimate candidates.

No, they did not.

http://www.christianpost.com/news/pew-p ... ts-160718/

The poll released Friday shows that 41 percent of white evangelical Protestant Republican voters back Cruz, compared with 38-percent support for Trump. And 44 percent of Republican voters who regularly attend religious services are likely to back Cruz, while Trump has the backing of only 29 percent in this category.

How many candidates did Cruz himself "knock off"? Jeb and Rubio were express casualties of the Trump campaign. Cruz hung around till the bitter end like the human cockroach he is but I wouldn't credit him with dispatching anyone.

I'd have to refresh my memory but I thought it was clear that Cruz's "ground game" outpaced that of Rubio's, and that as Cruz racked up wins or second place finishes it became clear that he was having the type of campaign people thought/expected Rubio would have. Some of that may be attributed to other establishment-friendly candidates creating a void for Trump and/or Cruz to fill by splitting the vote among themselves. That being said, my main point here was to disagree with CoF and others who say evangelicals rejected Cruz - the second-place finish seems to suggest otherwise, though I don't have the numbers/exit polls in front of me.

I've been here a long time and memory fades. I do think there was a discussion one time about ND speakers. I don't think it was a commencement speech but I think there was something controversial in the last few years.

The people who don't understand why Evangelicals voted for Trump are missing the point. The point was that Hillary Clinton was going to nominate a leftist to the Supreme Court and that could basically ruin the country for a generation. There are a lot more reasons why Trump was better than Hillary, but that was the biggest one. I wonder if the liberal people here just don't get that a third term of Obama would have pretty much ruined the country.

As I've gotten older, I like to think I've become more tolerant of other viewpoints, but this is just too much. How do you even manage to turn on a computer?

I can't stand Hillary and would welcome a third Obama term. It was a good 8 years.
