I guess I get it because they have no idea how long the kid has been in the car.

Yeah. Cars can heat up really fast too.

The worst stories are the parents that forget the kid is in the car.

That's inexcusable, I always think they are lying.

Yeah. It's questionable. It's just hard to imagine choosing to do that.

Leaving your child in the car is one thing. Leaving your child in in a running car is another. Leaving your child in in a running car at 2am is just fucking dumb. That doesn't excuse 3 fucking pieces of shit that murdered a 5 year old.

No doubt, but it's dumb and irresponsible to leave a child in a car.

I had my son in the car when he was like 2 weeks old. I was sleep deprived. Left him in the back seat as I ran in for some Thai take-out. It wasn't ready. waited like 10 minutes. got back in car, drove home. got out of car and saw him there. HOLY SHIT he's out cold and I forgot he was even in the car. my wife still doesn't know this story. he's 10 now.

that happens once to most people, I think....then it's kind of branded into your muscle memory the way grabbing the diaper bag before leaving is.

Yeah, she's 7 months old and I can't fathom forgetting she's in the car seat. It's inexcusable IMO

Leaving them in the car and forgetting they're in the car are two different things. I don't smoke pot so I'll never experience the latter.

I can't say I've ever forgot but I damn sure left them in there while I paid for gas or grabbed something quick. Watched the car like a hawk mind you but I feel like you let sleeping kids sleep. Never forgot they were in car.

Now my mom.. she left us everywhere. Grocery store, yard, gas station... different times.

+1.

I can still remember my dad saying: don't let them write me a ticket (as I sat in the old mercury wagon on Dearborn by Hillman's?)

Ours was a giant woody diesel Oldsmobile wagon. Or the big ugly brown Buick my dad owned. Do not know what it was, we called it fub in tribute to its plates. Or it looked like a fub. I was 5, who knows. Damn burgundy vinyl. That shit burned.

Focusing on the mother in this case is silly. Those motherfucker didn't steal a car that was left running and then realize a baby was in the car and abandon it. They shot the fucking kid in the head. They may have stolen the car and shot both of them if she took him in the store.

I don't know, man. I've left my two year old in the car to go into like a 7-11. 5 minutes max, not when it's extremely hot or cold, and definitely not at 1:30 AM (she would be in her room asleep). Also, I usually park right in front of the store so I have a direct view to the car the whole time if needed.

I would never do that.

Maybe an 8-to-10-year-old who knows how to lock/unlock doors and who could grab a bat from the back seat and go to work if need be, but not a 2 year old.

I don't think I'm a bad parent, but I'll definitely be thinking twice about it now. That's some scary shit.

I let my 8 year old(very tall for his age, 55 inches) ride shotgun in the car a few weeks ago(back was filled with cargo) and I had people ready to call DCFS on me...

The reason they said no kids in the front seat is the airbag, but most cars post 2007 have the option to turn off the passenger airbag, or it automatically turns off (as it does in my car) when a weight less than 90 pounds is registered on the seat when the car starts.

Would they report it if she left the kid in a running car at 1:30AM while going in to get Blunts and Newports?

If it is something like that, she should be charged with some form of reckless endangerment for her stupidity.

For some reason nowadays people are really looking for reasons to blame parents for anything bad that happens to their kids. Any news story or Facebook post about an incident turns into some sort of weird contest on who can tie it to some blunder by the parent. Like Nas said, the people who did this are the fucked up ones, but we all like to give ourselves the illusion that if a parent just did a or x or z, nothing bad would have happened. It's not to say that's wrong, but shit's going to happen and most of these parents aren't colossal fuck-ups, just unlucky.

If there was no chicken-egg analysis, there would be no laws, and no appreciation for cause-and-effect.

Every detail contributes.

If you engage in risky or reckless behavior, you are more likely to suffer negative ramifications for it than the person who does not.
