In this case it's an attempt to limit what could be a good viewing option. HBO even had to respond. Do we really want Twitter perpetual victims dictating what we can see?

hbo: we take your concerns are seriously. now here is the show.

But the larger concern is, these idiots can and do effect change even when it's not called for. For some reason, they do get listened to. Like Rick said, HBO had to respond to this . It's crazy.

HBO cancelled a show quickly about horse racing because of animal safety concerns. Other shows may face more scrutiny because of this.

It's possible Mad Men would have faced similar resistance due to how it may have portrayed women. Any show dealing with past generations is a target of the perpetual victimhood group.

My understanding is that viewership for the series was poor and that played a larger role

I remember during one of his TV review roundtables, Milt Rosenberg had a Sun Times columnist who mentioned the show was canceled "because the number of dead horses was higher than the total number of viewers"

Idk if Tropic Thunder would have survived in this day and age. Definitely don't think RDJ would have received an Oscar nomination like he did in 2008.

It did them no good to admit otherwise but it is very rare for any HBO show to be cancelled midseason like that was. It was cancelled one day after a horse had to be euthanized on set.

They renewed it for a second season and then dropped it.

Jamie Foxx was on JRE last week saying he has a movie coming out next year where RDJ (Mexican), Gerard Butler (black), and himself (white) will all be playing different races.

Can't wait to see how that is received.

The other thing is that it is VERY unlikely that the Confederates will be treated as anything but villians in this.

It's most likely going to be a show that allows middle and upper class people to subtly mock the "South will rise again" rednecks and show just how stupid that idea really is.

Why would SJW's be mad at this? This show will be right up their alley. It will be about how evil white people are and the myth that the South's main motivation for secession was due to slavery.

Those folks have basically taken over large swaths of the south (and southwest)- all of Arizona, Atlanta, Charlotte, much of Texas, and most of Florida.

It wasn't good but production shut down during the second season because of negative reaction from animal rights people. They thought it was good enough to renew and then gone.

It's really weird and sad. I'm going to have to use Google again to find out what they're talking about.

Yup!

I didn't know what this thread was even about. Googled #NoConfederates and now know there is a new HBO show coming. Might add it to the viewing list.

It's a work of fiction. Are we banning books (or TV shows) now?

Also The Guns of the South was pretty good:

i think if it were a book and not an upcoming HBO series, this controversy wouldn't exist. except maybe in an alternate timeline where books are popular again.

That would be awesome if They made a series in which the British won the War of Jenkins' Ear outright. Obviously highly controversial, but so much potential for drama.

well, there's no nuance when it comes to this kind of reactionary criticism. it's always a five alarm fire. i'm not condoning attacking something before it's out, i'm just agreeing with some of the sentiment that it can be perceived as offensive and insensitive.

the difference between germany in the 30's/40's and the US during the civil war is that the latter was a *civil* war, between its own nation. germany did not have defectors overthrowing hitler to free the concentration camps. there's a strange mystique to nazism because of what they got away with for a time. but germany wants nothing to do with that part of their history; we're still coming to terms with ours. it's harder because while the south "lost", they still are a part of our country and there are parts that still believe in the confederacy.

Well put.

But I am mildly interested in this project until I have a clear reason not to be. Frankly I wish people would put this kind of vocal protest toward the hours of bullshit "reality" tv shows dominating the airwaves.

This kind of behavior is self defeating, and the eventual pendulum swing back over the next 3 years will be very hard on Woke Twitter.

I'd heard about this series, but the protests were only briefly mentioned last week. HBO responding to the "hysteria" of some just seems to be a non factor. I'd guess that most who might take note are too wrapped up in "Power".

Yea I dont know where he gets the idea there was no domestic opposition to Nazi's. Also, its in Germany that they teach the hell out of that part of their history...Japan is the one that is not interested in discussing those years.
