I'm starting to think WFMT announcers are the only people in the world who pronounce every foreign name correctly. In diesen heil'gen Hallen!

I wonder how many posters in this thread know that JA Happ's preferred pronunciation of his name is "Jay"

So, why do news anchors/reporters...and Pat Hughes try yo pronounce Hispanic/Latin American names in an "authentic" accent but do not do the same for names of German, Irish, Polish, Swedish, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, etc., origin?

That seems odd to me.

This is something I already brought up. If we have to speak their language because they don't understand American then why aren't they expected to learn American? What other country forces it's own people to understand the languages and customs of foreign immigrants many of whom are probably illegal ? Their presence has now graduated from damaging the traditional customs of baseball to damaging the fabric of this country. Pat Hughes is a symbol of our surrender to immigrants culture.

for the most part i enjoy Hughes' work. That being said, he absolutely butchered the World Series win call.

"...jumping up and down like a bunch of delirious... 10 year olds."

Joe Buck's call reigns supreme.

Yep. He had years and years to decide how to play that and he fucking fumbled the ball.

That was quite the...underwhelming call for sure.

Yeah, that was fucking horrible.

When he takes an inning off every game because talking in a conversational tone for three hours a day 162 times a year is too grueling for one man to endure, he should have been preparing a little something for when that moment arrived.

When Joe fucking Buck dominates the home announcers call on something that happens once every 108 years, that's a problem .

I can't take his forced inflection on player names in what has got to be a Bernstein-esque attempt at sounding more cultured than thou.

Maybe he asks the players how they want their names pronounced.

Except Wilson Contreras doesn't even say his own name the way he supposedly told Pat. In his radio spot he doesn't elongate the "oh" in his last name the way Pat does.

Funny you posted this because I was going to Douchebag him for pronouncing Contreras as KOHHN-treras when, as you said, Wilson Contreras doesn't even pronounce his own name like that in his commercial.

Hughes reminds me of the Caucasian people in this SNL skit: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/ ... 9970?snl=1
NBC News employees (Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Julia Sweeney) over-emphasize Spanish pronunciation, but the new economics correspondent (Jimmy Smits), who's actually Hispanic, does not.

I think both Pat Hughes and Len Kasper are irritating.

Thats a great skit
