I don't get being a Boy Scout. And it's been a staple of hack stand-up routines that baseball managers look ridiculous in full uniform but grown men in scouting attire look more ridiculous than almost anyone.

What the fuck?

I love how the girl scouts claim they need an all female environment because "girls learn better that way".

This is some bullshit.

Earlier this year, the National Organization for Women urged the Boy Scouts to admit girls to the entire program, supporting the efforts of a New York teenager, Sydney Ireland, to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, as her older brother did.

"I just want to do what the Boy Scouts do — earn the merit badges and earn the Eagle Award," she told NBC News. "The Girl Scouts is a great organization, but it's just not the program that I want to be part of. I think girls should just have the opportunity to be a member of any organization they want regardless of gender."

In the past, the Girl Scouts have been cool to the idea of admitting girls into the Boy Scouts, citing research which showed that many girls learn best in an all-female environment.

"We are unparalleled in our ability to build great female leaders who contribute to society at every level," said Andrea Bastiani Archibald, a psychologist who helps guide the Girl Scouts.

Is it silly to ask why the Girl Scouts didn't just expand their programs to make these things available to girls who wanted them?

Saw a comment on Twitter that something like this is necessary because " what if a girl wants to be in the same organization as her brother". TELL THE FUCKING CHILD NO.

About 20 years ago a woman at the place I was working was selling Girl Scout cookies and I was surprised at how antagonistic the text on the box was towards boys. It said something like "The Girl Scouts provides opportunities for girls to do ___, ___, and ___, without the toxic presence of boys."

It didn't say "toxic", but it was something along those lines.

my daughter has been involved in Girl Scouts for 9 years now, and while it isn't my thing (my wife handles almost all of it, except for the 500 boxes of cookies a year i sell at work), it really is a good organization. She spends an awful lot of time working on projects in the community. Her particular group regularly visits local nursing homes, takes part in charity events for different causes, beautification projects in the town parks, stuff like that. She really enjoys it, and doesn't show any signs of wanting to bail on it, even when she starts High School next year. When i was a kid i was a Cub Scout for like one year and said "fuck this, lets go outside and play ball".

The things you "get" couldn't fill a thimble. Radio and shitty bands no one likes. Am I missing anything?

Boy Scout numbers have been dropping over the years. There are girls that want the rigor of the Boy Scouts. Plus, this gives parents the chance to take their kids to one setting for meetings and events. The way it was explained to me, this was for practical and logistical reasons more than anything else.
