There's several examples over various sports of teammates injuring eachother in fights at practice. It almost never ends up with a player being cut. Especially if the player injured was a terrible player anyway.

Niko instigated with a shove, Portis escalated with a blow to the face. That in and of itself would be acceptable, but for the blow causing serious harm.
