I assume the councilwoman will be giving up any and all protections she has in public settings in the name of her constituent's dignity.

There is nothing in the Constitution about a right to protect yourself from guns. Good for this councilwoman.

Bass said stores could install more security cameras and use security guards in place of the bulletproof glass, the station said.

Another politician offering up terrible solutions to non-problems. Cameras wouldn't do shit in this scenario to deter an attack and who's paying for the security guards?

Maybe this council person should focus on creating creating some true living wage jobs in her area so a life of crime is not really seen as viable an option for her constituents.

It's not just black people that Korean grocers harass. When I was a kid there was a Korean store on Dempster in Skokie called Little Bucky Discount. My mom would buy her cigarettes there because they were one of the few places that stocked her brand- Chesterfield regulars. One day she was in there to buy smokes and she took a walk around the store just looking at what they had. The proprietor started following her and my mom went nuts and started screaming at him, "DO YOU REALLY THINK I WOULD BOTHER TO STEAL ANY OF THIS CRAP???"

The scene in American History X was a Korean store if I'm not mistaken.

Sure, it's a stereotype. But stereotypes do exist for a reason. All you have to do is read the quotes from the Korean guys in the original article RPB posted. A lot of them do treat their customers like thieves. You can understand how this might inflame an honest and hard-working person, especially if it's a black person living in a poor neighborhood and handing over money to a shop owner who obviously has little respect for him or her and drives a Cadillac and lives on the Main Line.

When my partners and I bought our grocery store there were signs all over the gift shop section that said, "SHOPLIFTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW." The first thing I did was remove those signs. And my partners argued with me.

That's like the counterproductive signs I see in some restaurants that say "Bathrooms for paying customers only!"

My 4yr old daughter had to go to the bathroom once when we were out and nothing was around accept a small restaurant. I asked the owner if she could use the bathroom and she said "no, only for paying customers". I explained that she was potty training and she couldn't hold it for me to drive her somewhere else. She again said no. Upset, I told her fine, I will just let her piss all over the floor in the middle of your restaurant while her customers are eating dinner. She finally said, ok she can go. I told her thanks and I'll buy a fortune cookie from her, so technically I am a paying customer bitch!

lets see whats more intimidating or insulting for a patron of a shop. glass protection or security guards and cameras following you around the store

this is so absurd.

Those shops are mostly like leaches on the community anyway. Cigarettes, alcohol, lottery tickets, chop suey.
The People's Republic of Oak Park welcomes Austin shoppers with ample organic food options -- and no bullet proof glass!
