A lot of them do treat their customers like thieves. You can understand how this might inflame an honest and hard-working person, especially if it's a black person living in a poor neighborhood and handing over money to a shop owner who obviously has little respect for him or her and drives a Cadillac and lives on the Main Line.

When my partners and I bought our grocery store there were signs all over the gift shop section that said, "SHOPLIFTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW." The first thing I did was remove those signs. And my partners argued with me.
