This is a new trend I've seen on Facebook. People (adults) are posting things saying "for my birthday give a donation to [name the organization] instead of giving me a gift". Then they post a "go fund me" type page. First of all, after you turn 16 I ain't giving you shit. Second of all, who cares that you are turning 47? Third, I give plenty to charities of my choosing. Virtue singling run amuck!

I remember one of the parking garage attendants at the CME (back in the heyday) telling his trader customers that for his birthday he was registered at First National Bank.

don't mind the trend of "hey instead of a gift just give to a charity".

do mind the idea that you're imposing altruism on who you consider friends. that should be understood.

I bet the people who post such requests don't send gifts to their friends who don't on their birthdays.

the point is not for anyone to actually donate, its just to look good asking for people to donate.

Wrong. For the last 5 years I've told family and friends not to get me anything for birthdays and Christmas.
I've said if they still feel compelled to give gifts to offer donations to the greater chicagoland food depository.
The reason is because I don't need anything but folks still like to give a gift.
Since doing so a good friend had her birthday party at feed my starving children and that was a fun way to hang out for a birthday party.
So for Christmas this year I didn't get a bunch of useless shit for Christmas and my family ended up donating a couple hundred bucks that bought a ton of meals for some folks without food.
So screw off.

That is not the same situation as the OP and to what America was referencing.

I guess I misread that then.
I really dont want Christmas or birthday stuff. I want for nothing really.
My sister gave me an envelope for Christmas this year. It was a receipt for $100 donation to the greater Chicago food depository. It was the first gift I've ever gotten that put tears in my eyes.
Forgive me if I came off abrupt on this one.

The number one rule of donating is that you don't talk about donating.

You don't post this on social media though.

I believe what America & Franky are referencing is a Facebook post to the effect of; "It's my birthday on Friday, but don't get me anything. Instead, make a donation in my name to Charity XYZ"

expecting a birthday gift from anyone other than your children, spouse, and parents once you are over 25 is a big pet peeve of mine.

Once the grandkids were born my parents basically said no more gifts to us or from us on holidays. My mom of course violates this every birthday but I am grateful to not have to find gifts for the man who buys what he wants in the price zone I can afford when he wants.
