Let's see if SNL addresses this.

I've always like Jeff Bridges. He reminds me of Kurt Russell.

I don't know what to say about Kimmel and Fallon.

I wonder if black people feel differently about people doing the full out minstrel show black paint vs the brown make up thing? Probably not.

We have a few guys here we could ask. Like I said in the Northam thread, I don't recall blackface for a costume of someone that was admired (like that guy you posted dressed as Mr. T) being viewed as offensive in the same way it is now. Obviously, blackface has a history. But I believe that what I'm describing wasn't really considered blackface at the time and rather was just seen as an attempt to look as much like the person as possible. That's my recollection. I could be mistaken though.

That Kimmel as Malone thing wasn't that long ago and when you combine the blackface with the way he was speaking, I would consider that highly offensive. In fact, it's outrageous.

don't forget Howard Stern

Is it really blackface though when you are portraying a real life character who is black rather than a stereotype?

Not sure. I haven't spoken to a black person about blackface at all ever. Maybe they can chime in? It seems the acting like a minstrel or song and dance person from long ago is worse than being Michael Jackson for Halloween but again I am not sure.

No but context doesn't matter to MANY anymore.

Could Will Ferrell do the Eddie Murphy Buckwheat bit back in the day?

It won't be long before balaclavas are pulled off the market for too closely resembling blackface.

I remember it being pretty uncomfortable at the time too. It was right on the edge even back then. I just don't think people cared enough because he did it on a show that seemed proud of being offensive in the most non-offensive way possible. And now girls jumping on trampolines!

I do think there is a slight difference based on history of blackface vs. doing it on your whole body but just to be safe Jimmy Kimmel probably shouldn't be a Governor either.

I would argue that Kimmel is far more powerful than most governors. He single-handedly prevented the complete repeal of Obamacare.

Look, I'm not trying to kiss your ass after yesterday, but that was a perfectly-timed link.

As far as the response, I understand when people say that intentions don't matter. But sometimes they do. I understand the system sometimes determines us, but sometimes we determine ourselves, too.
