Just a terrible rule that has no business being in the game. Its little league shit. Changes the game completely. Baseball has been played for over 100 years and dealt with 10, 12, 14 inning games just fine.

I hope this piece of shit rule goes away real soon.

Yep.

It's so stupid I'm surprised Bud didn't come up with it.

I can't believe the players and owners agreed on this being a good thing. Last year, fine. It was a goofy/stupid year and you had to do whatever you could to get the games in. I get it.

At least play ONE extra inning like a true inning. I could see starting a runner at second during the 1st game of a double header if that game went to extras. Otherwise, it makes no sense for professional baseball players to be using little league modifications.

It will save bullpen arms. It might be here to stay. However, it feels inappropriate, especially after a pitching duel. DJ was frustrated last night. He falsely accused the rule of making the game sloppy.

I'm not saying this because the Sox lost. They didn't deserve to win last night anyway. Doing this changes the game completely. And yes its even more egregious after you have guys throwing lights out for nine innings last night allowing only a few total baserunners.

It really is an extraordinarily dumb rule that solved a non-existent problem.

truth. awful rule. I think if they keep it, there should be adjustments made to it if they keep it as is beginning in the 10th inning:

The manager decides and informs the umpire of their extra innings intention in the 7th Inning, regardless of score. Teams can select to have a runner start on 2nd, but the inning will then start with 1 out. OR, they may start with no runners on base and get the full 3 outs.

or, MLB could make the rule to begin in the 13th or 14th inning and let 10-12 be real baseball.

or, get rid of the rule.

All of that is incredibly stupid, no offense.

Start the 10th inning like a normal inning. Start the 11th inning like a normal inning. Start the 16th inning like a normal inning.

You want to save bullpen arms? Have your starter cover more than 14 or 15 outs. Score a run in the 8th or 9th and win the game in regulation.

Right.

Also, there was some stat when these rules came out that > 90% of extra inning games were decided by the 11th inning in the years leading up to 2020. It’s not like teams were burning through arms playing long stretches of 15 inning games. They burned through pitching because they used 5 guys to get 6 outs, which has seemingly been addressed through other rule changes.

Not going to happen. The underclass is identified and it is the non-closer relief pitcher. It becomes even more glaring when you see Marshall and Heuer usage compared to Kopech and Crochet.

Absolutely agree with OP. This is a dumbshit rule and it has no business in the majors.

It”s dumb. So are seven inning games. And minimum batters faced by relievers.

None of that shit is shortening games.

I am on board with shortening games. Make batters stay in the box. I am ok with pitchers having a pitch clock. And relievers should be ready in the pen and just start pitching when they are on the mound. I prefer those things over these other odd changes.

I just read the DH article on the Sox game. So we have two top tier starters pitch scoreless gems, and the game is ruined by silly extra inning rules....it is a shame.

Really brutal in a game like last night where two guys pitched their asses off only to have it end on a fake runner scoring.

at some point last night Jason was gushing about how IF YOU WANT TO SPEED UP BASEBALL this is the way to do it. It seemed odd he was getting so lathered up about it

Was he referring to having two starting pitchers mowing down the batters or the rule changes?

In retrospect, the Indians would have won 1-0 last night regardless of a runner starting on second because Grandal is worthless behind the plate.

i believe he was referrin to the pace, that the pitchers weren't taking a long time and the batters weren't constantly stepping out of the box. But he spent a good amount of time talking about it. Like we're in the middle of a great game/pitchers duel and he's going on about the time of the game, just seemed strange to me

I was thinking about the 3-batter minimum and was wondering what the penalty would be if a manager/coach made a second mount visit while being unable to make a pitching change. Has that ever come up? My guess is the ump would intervene before they reached the mound.

The bottom line is that the rule has probably not shaved any meaningful amount of time off of games, which was its sole purpose.

Solve the first 9 innings being boring before moving on to fixing the 10th.

Jimmy Cordero was wrecked. I care, but do WE care? The rules just aren't for pace of play.

It's an easy fix. Go to 120 games. We all know deep down, that's plenty of baseball to decide who's good. The glitch is the hallowed stats. Well, fuck those. I just want to see good baseball, something that's been lacking for what now, 20 years?

I thought it would suck but i like it. it adds strategy to the game and shortens the game too. I also like the 7 inn double headers - another thing I thought I'd be against. Anything to cut down the game of baseball i'm for.

the 3 batter rule get rid of....it doesn't really seem to be doing much to drastically shorten the game. maybe have the pitcher throw less warmup's when he comes into the game.

It might have been better not to put the man on second, but go with the 1-1 count (another feature of modified California Rules).
