Earlier tonight on my way back from work I went to a restaurant and ordered food for take out. My modus operandi for this particular place is to place my order, go to the bar across the street, slam two beers, pick up my food, and go home to my wife. The problem tonight was that the bar tender was too busy dancing with himself and talking to other patrons to get me my beers and close me out in the 20 minutes I have to accomplish these tasks. I like to pay cash for speed's sake and I would gladly pay $5 more in tip to avoid the questions from my wife about why I was late. So I paid the bartender $20 for a $13.85 tab and left. As I was walking out the door he shouted "Thank you!" like I'm some kind of high roller who left him a generous tip. The irony is, if he was a better bar tender, I would have left him a worse tip. I'm conflicted. Should I have just run out on the tab?
